I hit the BIG FIVE-OH this year so here I am in the "Nest". I really don't feel a day over 49 though, LOL. One of the main reasons that I tried low carb when I did was because I worried that if I waited much longer to lose the weight, it would that much harder to get off as I got older. Thank goodness that it worked. Now my goal is to maintain my loss as old age creeps ever closer and all the changes that come with it.

Oh Linda you are so right. I am 51. The older I got, the more the extra weight bothered me. I too knew I had to do something about it!! Now that I am down at least 2 sizes I feel soooo much better. I bend over and pick things up so much easier. I have always been an active person. At 270's I was walking 3 miles. Now I am trying to close in on "Onderland" and am not exercising at all!!! Shame on me. It is suppose to get alot cooler this week. I WILL start walking my 3 miles again!!! Welcome to the 50's. We might be older but we are also alot wiser!!!

I'll be the big double-nickel in November, and as some have jokingly said, "if I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself." Fact is, I haven't taken good care of myself for 50+ years by overeating carbs and sugar. But I'm finally taking control of my nutritional choices and improving my health.
Linda, I too decided I better get this weight off before it gets any harder. I have noticed that I am losing just a tad slower than I did in 2003, but it is coming off, thank God.
PJ, I'm walking too, but these temps in the high 90's here have made it hard to get the walking in. I'm hoping it cools here soon, 'cause I like my walking and wanna' get back to it.
Part of the fifty-something club...who'd a thunk it???
My personal testimony is "it is never to late to take charge of your health." I had always been trim and active until early menopause got me in my late 40's. At 60, or as I like to say "06" I took charge and started eating healthier and lost 156 lbs. I am now "36" and would like to loose the remaining 30 lbs. and get down to my college weight. My physical and mental health have improved tremendously.
In my search for Low Carb Recipes, a friend of mine sent me to Linda Sue's recipe site. In other web surfing I found "Jimmy Moore." Jimmy is my go to man on the web and a resource for all "low carb" I have learned so much from you both, and appreciate all that you both contribute. I hope to learn and contribute in the future.

I am 51, going to be 52 in FEb.
The sad part is I don't feel 50 and I don't feel as heavy as I really am.
But I know I dont want to get older being this heavy
SO I have to make changes now.

When you said you'd forwarded my email requesting an over 50 forum to Jimmy, I never dreamed the wheels would turn so quickly. But here it is, a 50s+ nest, in less than 12 hours!!! (Guess you and Jimmy figured we over 50s didn't have the time--or the patience--to waste on red tape.

) Thank you both!
Having a hangout of our own, while acting as members of the larger community, is invigorating. At KK, the 50+ forum was probably one of the most active, supportive, and educational groups, and I wouldn't be surprised if that happens here.
Look what a great start we've already made.

Hi everyone..
I'm 57...but you know I feel great and am pretty active. It's important to keep moving, but don't overstress yourself at our age.
I see women who are in their 80's plus at my minlaw's assisted living place. It is totally amazing the difference in how people age..especially after 60. Keep active and lose any extra weight and eat sensibly..and we will still be standing straight the next couple of decades!
I do think it is harder to maintain/lose weight at our age, but it is NOT impossible, of course..Especially with lowcarbing.

Hi Sandy...
I think Sunny, another newbie refugee, may have called it best--KKPTST
...Kimkins Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.
I, too, am taking a brief sabbatical--not to load up on junk, but to slowly ease my way back to the healthy side of low carbing. We can do this, Sandi. We not only have Jimmy's word, we have his example, and that of many other people on the site. And now we have the safety of the Nest. Just watch us little fledglings fly!

Hiya, Fam!
Thanks SO much for asking for this, Chrysalis! And Mel for getting with Jimmy and Jimmy for DOING it! You rock, dude! I always KNEW there was a reason I kept coming back to your site over and over again over the last year or more.
Anyway, I feel rather comfy here. The walls need some artwork, but we'll fix that in no time. (Chrys, that carrot/bunny cartoon is seriously cracking me up. Mind if I snag it ?)
This whole KK thing has been rather exhausting for me. I've been "doing the diet" (omg, reminds me of a poem someone wrote and it's making me giggle.), but being careful about myself and making friends on the KK forums, and all the while trying to keep up with what's going on to make sure it was on the up and up since I had my DH and my BFF doing it too. Then to top it all off, I made lots of nice friends and now I felt responsible for telling them what I knew, without causing too much of a ruckus.
Sigh. It's late. I'm glad I found my new hang out here in this forum and I can sleep easy tonite.

Talk to ya'll tomorrow. Sleepy tight.

Glad you like the rabbit and the carrot. But don't worry over much about him never getting the carrot. See, he's a leftover from my KK digs, but over here, at Jimmy's Place, he'll
finally snag the carrot...just as we will. Just wait and see.

Hi Linda...
Old age is a CREEP, isn't it?
I think Prevention magazine was founded on your concept...prevent it, don't cure it. We're on the right page.
Speaking of pages, I jetted over to your recipe site, and read, and read, and read. I didn't realize how much I've missed cooking...you know, the smells, the sounds, the feel, the smiles, and, oh yes, the tastes, of good (for the body, soul, and senses) food. Your recipes brought it all home, and I can't wait to try out some of your specialties.
I can almost feel the rhythmic chop-chop-chop, hear the sizzle of onions and garlic sauteeing in butter...ummmm, gotta run. I think an omelette is calling me.
Thanks for sharing all your hard work.

Hey Peaches...
Your family reunion? That's
my family reunion. We must be kin! I won't tell, if you don't--about the relatives, that is, not being the only normal ones. Course wise, being "normal" compared to that bunch ain't 'xactly braggin' rights, now is it?
Hey, I see you're from the Great State of Texas, too. Well, a great big Lone Star Howdy, little filly, and welcome to the Jimmy's Ponderosa. You know, they say you can recognize a
real Texas Woman by her gunbelt--she's got a Peacemaker in one holster, and a can of hairspray in the other...to keep her big Texas hair tamed, don't you know.
And we're the same age. ADD--it's a wonderful thing, especially in the untreated adult population!
Don't want to keep you from your cooking, and your date with Atkins...just wanted to get acquainted.

OK, folks,
I'm 56 and also sick and tired of fighting the fat. Came from KK where I lost 16, after low-carbing previously and losing 40 but regaining 15, and want to retain my loss (lowest weight in about 14 years!) and come down a little more to fit my frame (5'9") and live La Vida Low-carb! Jimmy, what can I say? You are a mensch! I don't know what we'd have done if you hadn't sent the lifeboat!
Great to see my fellow 50+ Buddies over here, and I know more will come. I had a private email from one of the Powers of Example from our crowd (about 80 lbs down) who has seen the light and let as many others know as she can to get out now. Didn't know about this site until I told her, so I hope she joins us.

Sep 10 2007, 2:01pm
Hi gals..
So nice to see so many 50 pluses here. I do believe we are "very special"
cases with our weight concerns. We naturally lose muscle each year unless we "weight or resistance" train. It's how aging works. We do have to work harder..And losing slowly is the BEST way for us because if we lose too fast, then we lose muscle, too..NOT a good thing at our age.
When menopause hits, that is the hardest time to lose with all the hormones flowing and NOT flowing, etc. So, I truly admire all of us who are seeking to live a healthy lowcarb life!
AND..let's chat about eating times..Dr. Groves (my lowcarb guru) says it is better to eat MORE in the morning, noon, and have a small dinner. Our bodies start storing fat at around 5-6, the author of "Outsmarting your Female Fat Cell" says. We burn calories all day, then we store those calories for sleeping time..So, we don't want to eat a big dinner every night, do we? But, this is what I DO...I need to turn that around I think..
Anyone else want to talk about eating times and losing weight???
