This just rips me up. One gal on KK had a miscarriage and she was eating around
600 calories, but plans on continuing the diet..We have got to get the word out that
very low calorie diets can cause birth defects, etc.

This is from Barry Grove's book:

I wish we could share this somewhere:

I was reading Natural Health and Weight Loss by Dr. Barry Groves and found this chapter on pregnancy, etc and dieting..He is UK's answer to Dr. Atkins..

Here are some important points that he wants to make for those who are try to conceive.

"Prepare in advance for children. A healthy child is dependent in the first place on being the product of a healthy egg and a healthy sperm.

Difficulty in conceiving is often the result of poor nutrition. Overweight women and those on low-calorie diets will find that the diet (basically Atkins) recommended here will frequently solve their problems. Note also that it is equally important that the father has good nutritional status prior to conception.

Pregnancy, and a proper diet for it, should always be planned. You may not realize that you are pregnant until after you have missed a period. By that time, your fetus could have been developing for 4 to 8 weeks. It is during these weeks that all your baby's internal organs, limbs, and face begin to develop. Damage at this sensitive time through unsuitable (low calorie) diet, smoking, or drugs contributes to many malformations such as cleft palate, malformed limbs, and defects to eyes, hearing, heart, or brain.......

THANKS for sharing this Carolyn!

Is that the reason she gave for the miscarriage? Do you know for a fact that KK diet/low calories was the reason for it?

Not trying to start something, just honestly curious.

Of course not..However, when people are trying to get pregnant, it is not a good thing to be on ANY low calorie diet. I have had 2 miscarriages and I do not know what caused them. However, I can rule out eating poorly, smoking, drinking, or drugs when I became pregnant.

My point here is showing that women who are trying to conceive should eat healthy..even when they are trying to get pregnant because you never know when this is going to happen.

Miscarriages happen..However, eating healthy and taking care of your body is essential..wink.gif Losing weight while trying to get pregnant is not a good idea.

Miscarriages happen..

That they do, and they can happen to anyone at any time during the pregnancy.

When my sister was pregnant, people frequently told her how lucky she was that I could deliver her baby for her. She would jokingly respond back No, he only knows how to deliver crack babies. Unfortunately, she is probably right laugh.gif

I have delivered healthy babies to women who smoke crack, do other drugs, drink and literally hold no regard for her health let alone the health of their child. Who knows what mental problems these children will end up with, but when they are born they are fine. On the flip side, I have also delivered unhealthy babies from women who were obviously trying to do everything perfect. There is no rhyme or reason.
