I lost three pounds this week - painlessly I might add.
So how come when I look in the mirror I LOOK fatter and I feel bloated? I have been reducing my sodium intake, so you'd think it would be the opposite.
I'm at the lowest weight I've been in a few years, yet I still LOOK and FEEL very fat. Well, I am fat! That's the reality! I guess I'll need to lose at least 10 pounds to feel like I'm going down in weight.
Anyone else go through this?

Paleogal,
Congratulations on you weight loss. Paleo has lots of goof things about it as well as many benefits.
As far as still looking 'fat', well....I'm a man and I'm not dumb enough to comment on whether a woman looks 'fat' or not!
I've lost 30 pounds since July 1, but I am just now really starting to 'see' the difference. I could feel my clothes getting looser week by week. Hang in there and keep the faith, and one day soon you'll wake up and see a thinner you!

When I first started, I made a deal with myself that I wouldn't get on a scale for an entire month. I figured if I had a once a month weigh in, I wouldn't get obsessed with the day to day or week to week numbers and I'd have something to be happy about at the end of the month. I didn't spend a lot of time examining myself in the mirror either. When you've got that "fat mindset", you're going to see what you want to see. In my case, eating right and not wasting any time obsessing about it worked for me.

Nice job, Paleo gal. It's probably because you're losing weight the correct way. Again, you don't lose weight because of how little you eat, it's eating the right kinds of food. If you're lifting weights too, your muscle weighs more than fat so that can skew your scale results as well. Either way, you should begin getting leaner soon enough.
Hang in there, we're proud of you!

You have done great, paleogal! But how you FEEL isn't necessarily how you ARE! I sometimes "feel" fat from the loose skin on my tummy still. Then I remember how far I've come from that 400+ pound man I was and all those negative thoughts go away.

Wow, what nice, encouraging replies!
I've said it before and I'll say it again - this is the kindest website I've ever been on (for lowcarbing) and Jimmy, that's because it all trickles down from the top. You started this website and set the tone for it, and we all responded!
I predict this will become the most popular low carb website.
I am starting strength training. I bought the Cardio Free Diet because it stresses strength training (I just ignore the horrible low calorie diet the author Jim Carras offers). I feel strength training will really boost my metabolism.
Charles, I believe you once mentioned a strength training book written by the Eades (of Protein Power). I'll go search for that one on amazon too.
Thanks again everyone for your kind replies and encouragement. I really love the Paleo way of eating. It's a plan I can live on forever. I finally found a perfect fit! I am a slow loser, but the tortoise won the race!

God bless you, paleogal! When you attract the cream of the crop people, you get a cream of the crop site. THANK YOU for being a part of that!

Paleogal:
The book might be hard to find that way. It was written by Frederick Hahn and Dr. Eades. If you can't find it, look for Frederick Hahn. It's called Slow Burn.

Cograts Paleogirl. I was just going to echo what Jimmy said. It's weird but when I do the old sideways turn in the mirror my stomach always looks pouchier than before. Then I put my pants on and I'm amazed that they are looser than before.

I've often thought that the eating part of weight loss and weight maintenence was the easy part (not always), but that the hard part is re-training your brain to accept that you have lost weight, that it can be for life, and that its ok to be where you are at, even if you have more to lose. I still struggle with it, but just wanted to say that I'm glad you posted.

You're right on the money! Most of us have lived with 'fat' so long we are constantly fighting that mental battle to overcome that 'fat image'. I've often said the same thing, that the food and eating part is not nearly the struggle that the mental part of the new lifestyle is.
But ya' know what? We're all gonna' hang in there and keep fighting the battle until we win. Darn it, I've struggled with it all my life, but somehow I've never totally given up. And now that I've found an eating plan that fits me like a glove, I'm working on creating a new mental image of the 'new thin me' and making plans to live it for a lifetime.
And yes, most of us seem to be living on 'Someday Isle' so far as the pounds gone are concerned. Someday Isle be thin. Someday Isle be attractive. Someday Isle eat healthier. Someday Isle reach my goal. Well, Today we achieved something! We're farther down the road today than most of ever dreamed of being! That's gotta' count for something! Let's all live in today's accomplishments and be grateful for the success we have achieved. Celebrate!!!

I don't know Paleogal. All I can say is that *for me* it is mostly mental. HA!
Really, I see myself every day, so it is hard to see the changes and sometimes the "getting nowhere" feeling makes me a bit negative. (I try not to *ever* camp out *there* though.)
Like Melodie, I see smaller clothes fitting better, and I know that the real me is coming back. :-)
Or people who see me only once a week notice, and that confirms it too.
I came downstairs for breakfast the other day and one of my kids said, "Wow, Mom! You are really getting skinny!"
Sometimes the mirror tells me it's not happening, but it IS happening. It's just that my seeing and thinking are like the caboose that comes in last to the station.
