Hi to all

well I just saw dr yesterday went in with many plans and she said all good choices was up to me .. well not the answer i was looking for . kimkins was my first experience to low carb. i did well and then fell off again and again and agin to where i started it again today until a fellow friend lead me here.. now i have no clue what to do. i am 5.10 and weigh 370 not active as far as exercise and have no health issue but being fat. I am not sure how many cal or carb etc where i should be for my weigh class at this point vs some one 200 or smaller. any and all advice will be great . my dr did advise for me to use whole grains like slow cook oatmeal and brown rice.. i havent had but can we have what can we eat or not have vs kimkins im really lost right now.. i do enjoy my atkins shakes and the eas shakes helps me during day while im at computer all dayu with work. i work form home so the shakes help me stay on track usually if i do get hungry will do the egg and egg whites or low sodium tuna no mayo... so i ask all who can assist so i dont have to head to the operating table in the next 6-12 months i thank you ..

Have a blessed evening day

Hey Susan!!! I am so glad you came to check this site out. I know that you are going find the WOE that is a perfect fit for you.

Hi Susan,

If you see two posts it's because my first one went to hyperspace. If you are coming off of Kimkins I urge you to add more fats to your diet immediately. It's probably what your body needs right now. Don't be afraid of it, it won't put weight on you as long as you keep your carbs low. Probably 20g until you decide on a plan. Add butter, full fat salad dressings, and cream to your diet. Please read the link below, it may put your mind to rest.

Best to you and PM me if you have any questions.

Susan, I would suggest starting by reading Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, 2002. There are oodles of copies at amazon.com for just a penny each. It's also in almost every library. (I'm a bookseller and I rarely go into Goodwill or to any other thrift store without seeing a copy for a dollar or less. It's sold over 15 million copies, which puts it in the top 50 highest selling books of all time.)

Atkins is very easy, very generous, and very adaptable to your favorite foods, current weight, metabolism, and goals.

It's very, very simple. No calorie counting, no weighing food, no need for complex calculations or Fitday. Basically you just eat rich meat with as much fat as tastes good to you and add some good salads (with salad dressing, black olives, hard boiled eggs, whatever you like) and veggies.

But it's really best to read the book and be introduced to how and why it works.

When it comes to losing *fat* (which is all you want to lose), a high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb diet is more efficient than a total fast.

With low-carb done by the book, you're not depriving your body for weight loss; you're *nourishing* your body for *fat* loss.

You can do it!

(Renee! Wow!!! What a record: you're doing great!)

Susan, until you get the book (and DO get the book :-) immediately increase your fat intake. Don't be afraid of dietary fat; it *unlocks* stored body fat.

Keep doing 20 carbs, have as much protein as you like, and add as much fat as tastes best to you. Make your meals as delicious and fresh as you can possibly make them without going over 20 carbs.

Meat, fat, salads, veggies, up to 3T heavy cream, up to 10 olives per day..... There is much more to it. There's a start, but it's very important to read the book.

One more thing.... When switching from Kimkins to Atkins, you might experience a temporary weight stall. This is because your body needs to rebuild lean body mass. You will still be losing fat--and at a much faster rate--but you will need to rebuild lean body mass.

It's ok to watch the scale, but also keep an eye on how your clothes fit. If your clothes are getting looser, then you are getting SMALLER! :-)

thnaks will increase fat ok but what is the amount of cal i should have a day im under way under 1000 what is or are good number to stay in for my starting weight? i read that obese people bodies needed more than 1200-1500 cal aday to live off of and if it take 3500 cal to gain a pound how do you gain if you eat less?

do you all track your daily intakes?

Sparkys Girl
Hi Susan and Welcome!

Honestly, I'd say don't worry about calories right now. Just focus on eating healthy. Eating less than 1000 calories is way too low to maintain a healthy body. You need to try to change your thinking a bit and get away from the Kimkins mindset. It's gonna be a bit tough, but you can do it (I'm saying this from experience as an ex-kimkinite).

Until you get the book, which hopefully will be soon, you can get more information here:

Atkins Phases

Now this will give you a good idea of how Atkins works, but please don't substitute this info for the book. The book gives you a much better understanding of it all.

If, after a while, you decided Atkins is not for you, there are many other great low-carb plans you can check into. But for now you should focus on just eating healthy. Meat, non-starchy veggies, a little cheese. Don't worry about counting calories or fat (just count carbs for now) until you've gotten into the plan a bit. Until then you might not be ready for scrutinizing your ratios. If you start off the plan obsessing over it all or stressing yourself out, you won't enjoy any of it and it will just make it harder on you.

Just my 2 cents.

(((HUGS))) YOU CAN DO IT!

I agree that increasing your fat immediately while keeping carbs to a minimum is key. You're gonna do GREAT!

Hi Susan,
Welcome! user posted image

We're all in the lifeboat Jimmy sent for us! You can do this, and I know you will. I was JUST where you are about 10 days ago. Everyone was so helpful. Melodie, or perhaps another angel here, recommended this link: www.scientificpsychic.com to assess your lean body mass and therefore get minimum protein and calorie recommendations. I don't eat as many calories as they say I can, because I'm still trying to lose. I found that info helpful. See if it helps you while you're finding just the right plan for you.

I'd add cream to the coffee and shakes, if you must have a shake for a meal. I'd put butter in the eggs (not egg white) and throw in some bacon, if you like it. Have mayo, olive oil, even peanut butter if you can handle it (I put 1 or 2 TBS of peanut butter in a whey shake if I'm going to have one) and eat fatty meats, not just lean chicken.

I'm doing a version of Atkins and adding some things in that the Groves plan allows. Haven't fine-tuned it yet, but I'm down several pounds from my KK lowest weight, so no harm done yet!

Hang in and stay close,
Love,
Sunny

I agree with what everyone else has said .

Increase the fat immediately, don't worry about calories for now and read the book.

I'm re-reading for the umpteenth time.

I was really overwhelmed and paranoid about transitioning off KK because when I went off plan there I would re-gain a lot and quickly and then would be stuck in a stall, but after vacation and coming back to "the news" I figured why not now and I have had great success surprisingly and happily. I am so happy that I made the transition and you will be too.

Sorry to all those that have read me saying this a couple of times on the board but you just don't know how happy I am to be free of this woe and to be losing again.
Sparkys Girl
sftruth - we are never tired of hearing how happy someone is on low-carb! Keep sharing the good news! biggrin.gif

Absolutely! Eating 1200+ calories and consuming unlimited fat, moderate protein, and very few carbs will almost assure you of success on your low-carb lifestyle. YOU CAN DO THIS and NEVER LOOK BACK again! smile.gif

thanks so much for all the help and advice like seeing old friends and meeting new ones..

ok i cant have a lot of sodium so its it ok still to do the low carb atkins? also when buying products we buy regular, lite, fat free, low carb etc ...

im getting book this weekend and want to do shopping. is a lot of red meat ok? im not big fan of it im ok with hamburg and pork is this ok and is white cheese better and no milk correct even soy products?

coffee creamers?
can have carb ice cream?

just trying to get educated thanks
Sparkys Girl
You are fine doing atkins with sodium restriction. Just watch your intake like you would with anything else.

Red meat is fine. You can eat whatever meat you like best. Just give yourself variety so you don't get bored. biggrin.gif

Look for full fat products. Avoid lite and fat free since they remove healthy fats and add unhealthy sugars. If something says low-carb, be sure to look at the ingredients as well as the nutrition label. Some things will claim to be low-carb, but when you read the label it will have more carbs than some of us consume in a whole day! Also the ingredients label should never contain white or enriched flours or any type of sugars such as corn syrup, honey, molasses, high fructose corn syrup, glucose, pectin...

Soy is one of those issues that are very personal. It's been debated whether it's healthy to consume or not. Personally I don't eat much. I'm not a huge fan of the taste and I'm not convinced it's healthy, but others may have differnet opinons on this. wink.gif

White cheese is no different than orange cheese. All cheeses are ok in moderation. Start out limiting yourself to about 4 ounces per day (someone correct me if I'm wrong on this amount. I depending on my memory here)

Coffee creamer? Only heavy cream or half and half. Milk is high in sugars and the powedered stuff is not good for you at all.

There are some delicious low-carb ice creams you can get. But many, if not all, contain sugar alcohols, which can produce some nasty effects in your stomach if you over consume. This is another issue that you will hear different opnions on. I'm ok with some sugar alcohols, but I won't ingest much because I don't like spending all day on the toilet. biggrin.gif If you decide to try some lc ice cream, or other lc treats, wait until after you've finished up induction. (you'll understand it better once you read the book) If you have a sweet craving during induction you can have some sugar free jello with homemade whippped topping (no store bought - it's loaded with sugar as well).

Keep learning! It may seem overwhelming now, but eventually it will become second nature! biggrin.gif
