Since I'm not the only cat fan here:
My spoiled rotten guy has been in hog heaven since I went on atkins, because he gets a share of the fish, lamb, and buffalo that I've been treating myself to. Just like my hair has improved on the diet, his coat looks better than ever and he's been putting on the weight that he needed to gain. I'm thinking of tapering off his cat food (which there's a lot of scary info about ) and feeding him unseasoned versions of what I'm eating (usually organic grass fed meat or wild caught fish) permenently instead of just as as a day to day treat. Anyone else tried this?

I don't have a cat, but I have heard of others putting their pets on low-carb. They have all had fantastic results! And why shouldn't they.. it's the way animals were meant to eat!

I've
blogged about this TazChick and it's fascinating how livin' la vida low-carb is the NATURAL diet of cats. ENJOY!

My Pom is a low carb baby from day one---he is crazy about salmon---but you ought to see him when I make liver----he's an omnivore like his mama---so he gets some veggies in there too

I saw this post and had to say something.
My little girl cat (well she's not so little), gained a ton of weight and her doctor put her on a low carb diet. No kiddin' in fact she inspired me to give it a try.
She's lost about two pounds which is great for her. (her starting weight was 15, way too much for her!) We'd like to get her down to about 12.
So, we are diet buddies. She's on an all natural protien food. Very low carb and high protien.
I just love that my cat is one of my diet buddies! Cracks me up.
We find support in all places.

I've heard of people doing stuff like this! There's a pet-food "movement" called "BARF" (for Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods), where people prepare their own cat food from raw meats, some fresh veggies, and even bones and organ meat. It's supposed to be more like what a cat or dog would eat if they'd killed it themselves.
It's scary when you read the ingredients in cat food. There's so much grain in it...and cats are almost totally carnivorous! No wonder so many pets are obese and getting diabetes these days. :-(
Lucky and Squish are almost always interested in whatever I've got going on in the kitchen, but Banshee is not a fan of people food.

The entire Cat Food Dog Food scare last Spring was heart breaking to some people I know. And in some ways a blessing, because it exposed all the junk and bad foods put in those cat foods.
My girl cat, Mickey has a deal about not eating any thing that doesn't come out of a cat food can. My boy, Jack, would eat garbage if I let him. He doesn't care. But he's the one with the true dietary problems. Cats. I love them.
