There's only four of us here? No way there's just four folks here that wanna' lose 100 pounds +. Let's take just a minute and introduce ourself, if you feel comfortable with it.
First of all, let me just say that I feel outnumbered here by all the women on this forum. WOW! Oh well, y'all need a man's perspective occasionally...don't ya?
I'm a purebred southern boy, the oldest of three children...direct from the hills of East Tennessee. Actually not a boy anymore...I'll be turning 55 in November...wow, that's sobering! I am married to my high school sweetheart...35 years now. We are empty nesters. Our only child is 31 and lives nearby. I am in the plumbing business and have been since 1984. Kind of a draining job sometimes...LOL!
I've fought with this weight thing all my life, and I really mean that when I say all my life. My pediatrician put me on diets when I was just a kid. And yeah, I endured all the ugly, mean insults from other kids...but hey, I lived through it. I recently decided to take the future of my health into my own hands and do something positive. I started Low-Carb July 1, 2007 and I'm so glad I did.
I love the internet and computers, so this forum is one of my favorite places to hang out and chat with my LC buddies...even if most of them are women. I've already learned tons of great things here and met some really nice folks. Let's keep sharing the love and encouragement...we all surely need it.
Blogging is new to me, but I am enjoying it and it is a great accountability tool. It helps to exercise one's brain and keeps you in great mental shape. Donuts were my trigger food, my addiction food and my everything food. That's why I decided to name by blog, 'Life Without Donuts'. See the link below if you'd like to see what it's all about.
OK...who's gonna' be next? Step right up and introduce yourself.

Hi Ron and Sandi. I am Pam. I am 51 and live in the country in central Ohio with my DH of 32 years. We have 2 sons. One married and lives close to us. His wife has 3 grown sons. Our other son lives about 1 1/2 hours away and has a fiance that has a two year old son. So we have inherited 4 grandsons!!! I have had weight problems all my life. When I was in grade school I was on a diet. I always had to look for the chubby dresses in Penny's and Sears catalogs. I am so glad they don't call them that anymore!! I was always the one holding the end of the jump rope and the last one picked for softball. But at least I was out there trying!! I have always been very active. Before I started this WOE I was walking 3 miles a few times a week. I have lost mass amounts of weight before but have never been to goal. I always end up gaining it back. I am lucky that I mostly don't add some extra when I do!!! I started Kimkins in June and thought it was the answer. I lost very quickly and loved eating that way. My brain and my sister told me that I shouldn't do it for very long so I added fats. Now I am just feeling my way along. I haven't lost much since I quit K/E, but I am at least staying here and not gaining. I really think I can stay away from all that "white crap" forever. I haven't had one bite of it since I started!!! Yea!!!

Hi Sonja! We can do this together.
Sandy I found the Atkins 72 book at an Antique Mall for $5 and bought it. I haven't read it yet though. I also have the ANDR. I read it but need to again. I am really just not eating many carbs. The ones I do eat are veggies and fruit and some nuts. I have a problem with just eating a few nuts so I am trying to stay away from them!! I have decided that I need to make it a rule that wheneverI eat I have to sit at the dining room table. That way I know how much I eat and am not eating mindlessly. That is my biggest problem. I also got away from regular exercise this summer. I am trying to get a regular exercise schedule started. I will just keep tweaking until that scale starts going down again.
It will work this time forever!! I am finally living instead of dieting!!!!

Sonja,
So glad to see you here with all the rest of us 100+ folks. Most all of us have been down the 'lost-it then gained-it' road at least once. For me, I've been there at least three times. So, let's not wallow in our past that we can't change. Instead let's focus on today! What can I do to improve my life today? Taking it one day at a time, we'll all be a success and proudly share our stories.
We're here to cheer each other on, so come here often and let's join together to make it happen.

PJ,
I really identified with your story! I can never forget my mom taking me to get school clothes and her telling the man at the store that I was a 'husky'. Talk about damaging you for life! I thought I was a sled dog until I was a teenager...LOL. I hated having that 'husky' tag on my clothes and that stigma has unfortunately stuck with me for life.
And I was ALWAYS the last one to be picked for kickball. They even picked all the girls before they would pick me. Talk about smashing your self-esteem! Plus all the ugly, mean remarks kids can make. But that's all behind me now. I've decided to move on with my life.
Sugar, flour, rice, potatoes, pasta and bread do not work for me either and I have put them behind me...never to go back to them. As I said, I was a Donut Junkie, but have been delivered from them since July 1.

Thanks Ron. Yes the kids are so cruel. I moved way past all of that stuff too. I love who I am now. I am a confident, fun-loving person. I think the older I get the more satisfied I am with myself. I want to lose weight for different reasons than I did when I was younger. I don't care what people think of the way I look now as long as I feel good. With all this hanging skin I guess it is good that I don't care!!!

I want to be part of that graduating class too. Whenever it is!!

Hello! I'm Mechelle, from Mississippi, and I would like to loose 175 pounds (325-150). My doctor just tested me for insulin resistance, and I don't have the results back, yet. But I have a feeling that I am. From what I can find on the net, a LC diet is the one that will help me the most healthwise.
I do have two days of stumbling blocks, however. I'm halfway through a cake decorating class with 2 more classes to go. I took it because it sounded fun and I hope to save money in the future by decorating my daughter's birthday cakes. She's 5 and skinny, and she loves/prefers meat and LC veggies naturally, so at first I think I'll just eat what she eats. Yes!!

Welcome Mechelle! Yes, you are definitely on the right track and you have just landed on the best site on the net for friendly, helpful low-carb encouragement, education and inspiration. LC is not only the best diet for losing weight if you have insulin resistance, it can actually reverse it according to several experts in the field. I was never tested for IR but may have been experiencing the beginnings of it. I been doing LC for nearly 3 months and I feel like my weight loss success is improving day by day.

Hey everyone, Tami here, I want to lose 150 total, have a little bit of a start at having lost 35 pounds, but still a long way to go. I am currently reading Jonny Bowden's book Living the Low Carb Life. If you haven't, I suggest that you do because once you understand what the sugar/carb crap does to your body, it definitely makes it easier to pass that stuff up.
Anyway, I wanted to share a traumatic childhood event...my grandmother lived out in the country on a farm, and I loved that farm. What I didn't like was when a lot of the family got together to grill hamburgers and then make homemade ice cream. This was before the electric homemade ice cream machines. All of the kids wanted to sit on top while someone else cranked the wheel. Everyone except me, that is. I had to sit on it. I never volunteered. I would try and hide, but they always came to get me. Why? Because I was the only kid FAT ENOUGH TO HOLD IT STILL SO THEY COULD CRANK IT!!! Need I say that homemade ice cream has never been a temptation for me?
Oh well, old stuff now, but it sure did hurt then.

Tami,
So glad to have you here. We're with you all the way as you reach your goal. 35 pound may not seem like much to you but it really is. I've continually had to tell myself to focus on the success I've had rather than how far I have to go.
I can tell you that a 12 pack of 12 oz canned soft-drinks weighs exactly 10 pounds. Just go in your kitchen or while at the store, pick up a 12 pack and just feel how heavy that 10 pounds really is. In your case, you've lost 3-1/2 of those 12 packs. Try picking up just three of them at one time...that's how much less you're carrying around with you 14 hours a day!
There are other common items you can use to compare your actual weight loss to. The point is, you are making tremendous strides and your success is going well.
Come here often and let's encourage each other in making it to our goal. And remember, it's more than just reaching a numerical goal...it's about attaining a new healthy lifestyle.

Hi, I'm Andrea from Oregon, just picked the name Taz because bieng on Atkins gives me a ton of energy plus a little more assertiveness. I don't think it's so much of an "atkins attitude"- I just don't feel drugged and docile from carb overload anymore .
I started at 293 in 2006 and lost 50 lbs on LA weight loss. I hit a wall during the winter, bieng desperately hungry ( biking in the cold, working out, swimming, ya THINK I might be working up an appetite?) Because I was so hungry at the end of the day, and set up for failure by their expensive sugary shakes, bars, and snacks, I couldn't stay with it, and turned to hoodia to control my appetite.
I finally figured, If I have to take a pill to control my appetite, something is wrong here .It came down to going back to atkins, or start looking into some kind of surgery to change my eating.
So here I'm now about 15 lbs lighter than my lowest LA weight loss weight, still eating healthy - and not starving all the time ! :I honestly don't know what weight I'll wind up at , because I have never been thin in my entire life, but I'd like to lose between 90-120 lb based on what that weight looks and feels like.

HI all!!!
I'm in. My real name is Serena. I am about 300 pounds now. My original loss from Atkins those wonderful years ago was from 348 to 145 in about 1.5 years. I got into a relationship that started turning abusive and I ate out of sorrow. Binge eating, not just regular eating. Then I covered (or so I thought) by chugging laxatives. I spent a fortune on MoM, I swear. Well, older and wiser now, I'm living at my parents house and raising my 9 year old. I just met a guy that seems very nice, he liked bigger women. I don't want to be a bigger woman anymore though.
I have about 150 pounds to lose, but today is my daughter's B-day so I will eat spaghetti and not feel bad because it is planned. I will not touch the cake, opting for some SF ice cream.
Then tomorrow I go back on strict induction.
Have a good day!!

I'm still here hanging around. I just don't post often. Thanks for thinking of me Sandi!! I have been stuck in my weight loss for awhile so I went on Atkins 72 Induction for a few days and then added a few things back. I am light pink on the stick. I don't care if I lose very fast. I just want to keep living this way for the rest of my life!! I haven't had any cheats for almost 4 months now!! Woo Hoo!! Can you believe that?? I sure can't. We even took our 2 year old grandson to the fair today and didn't eat anything!! I made a couple sugary things for the family this weekend and didn't even have an urge to sample it. My "cheats" are fruit or a small piece of dark chocolate or choco-perfection bars. Wow what a change for me. I love this way of life. Now if I can just get my hair to grow back in!!

It is still falling out, but I did KK for a couple months. I am taking extra biotin and folic acid. I can't wait for "Onderland". I can feel it calling me!!!

Hi,
My name is Kristi. I have lost 35 and need to lose another 100-ish, I think. Yes, Ron, I
do think we need a man's perspective!
I am also married to my high school sweetheart. We are both 41 and graduated from high school in 1984. Our 22nd anniversary is this next Friday. We are no where near being empty nesters, though. Our oldest is 21 and is married, but we also have at home a 15, 12, 10 and 8! We live in Oregon.
My husband is a plumber, too, and has been since 1984--well, he started his apprenticeship in 1984, that is. What a funny co-incidence! Tim is also a private pilot. I am a home schooling mom.
Being fat as a child was so painful for me and one of my five children is a tiny bit chubby. I am hoping that I can prevent him having the pain I did. All my family is eating low carb now...

Hi Kristi,
Great to hear from you and wish you continued success in your weight loss. Seems like there are very few of us men here on the forum. I don't really know why, because this way of eating is great for all of us. Sometimes I think it is due to the fact that men just don't seem to talk about things like weight loss for some strange reason. At any rate, I happy to be surrounded by all the wonderful gals here at LCD.
As a plumber, I almost ate myself out of a job! Really, I was getting to the point of not being able to function without difficulty. 33 pounds gone has made a huge difference already. Glad to hear your whole family is doing LC. It makes it so much easier when everyone is on the same page.
Come here often and let's encourage, educate and inspire one another. It is so important to have and be a part of a friendly community like this one. Best wishes.

I wanted to bring you a little update. Today marks 3 months doing low-carb. I have lost 33 pounds and I am now 1/3 of the way to my 100 pound weight loss goal. I thought I would post my 'Before' and 'Current' pic here [they are also posted in the pic section].

Started at 288 pounds, July 1, 2007

255 pounds, October 1, 2007 -- That's 297 Donuts gone forever! Woo-hoo!
I guess you can tell I'm just a little happy about meeting one of my first major goals. I'm feeling better than I have in years and there have been so many positive improvements to my health in only 3 months time. I may post about some of them later.
Thanks to all my LC 100+ friends for all your support and encouragement. Together, we can all make good health happen! Best wishes!

Ron,
Awesome job getting 1/3 of the way there! I am trying to lose 100 as well. I have questions.
Do you weigh yourself once/week?
I'm curious to see how the weight loss drops off. I need to know what to expect, so that I don't get discouraged.
Here is my chart after 5 weeks. Is this the kind of pattern you saw initially?

I'm averaging 4.2 pounds per week. Does this continue? or is it a gradual drop off?
Thanks in advance!!!!

That's pretty close to my weight loss line, Eric, and it may dip to 2-3 pounds a week as you near your goal. KEEP AT IT!

Oct 1 2007, 5:11pm
Eric,
I weigh once a week, every Sunday morning. My average, as you can see is 2.5 pounds per week over the first 13 week period. You look like you are averaging more than that, but I am still very happy with my average. I am in this for the long haul, and have 100 pounds total to lose. It will probably take me close to a year to reach that goal, but that's fine. I want this way of eating to be entrenched in me.
I eat well, and don't go around hungry on low-carb. I could probably lose a little faster if I cut dairy and fruit, but I really enjoy both of them and plan to make them a regular part of my nutritional lifestyle. I don't want to wait a year to introduce those items into my diet.

Ron, I'm Dan. I introduced myself to the 100+ club earlier.. Sorry to be late entering this thread, but I've been focusing on other areas, especially the diabetes section since Jimmy made me moderator. I am still a work in progress on the 100+ journey, but I'm getting there.
Us 100+ guys need to stick together. When I was in Weight Watchers (which was a total disaster) it was the same thing -- two or three guys surrounded by women. Before I posted more info on the Forty Something's Fabulous Funhouse, Kanjivee thought I was a woman.
Seriously, the women on this forum are great. It takes everyone's contribution to make this a success. Let's keep pressing on!!! |
Thanks Dan! I'm so glad you joined us here, and it is nice to have another guy on board. I love reading your posts.
