I hope I posted this where it should be. I have planned to record this show--as seeing it previewed on Oprah today sparked my interest. I like Dr. Oz, and thought this would be a good place to discuss the show. It is on tonight (part 1, I think, of a multi-part series) on Discovery Channel at 7 p.m CDT. CYA tonight after the show!

Dr Oz is too fond of grains and afraid of fat for my liking.

I'm with you on that one. He and his daughter even trash the Atkins diet in their books, although he does it with a bit more grace than she does...

What specifically do they say? I've never run across Oz's opinion on LC. Have this series on now, and after watching the Oprah, I have to say I am disappointed....Bob Greene gives his "seal of approval" on a Lean Cuisine Panini? That bread did not look whole grain. Gonna have to check that out in the store. No one mentions anything about carbs either.
Now I am watching the actual series--where the people in the zoo eat raw veggies and fruits (and nuts). 11 lbs of food. YIKES. I tell ya though--the fiber subject is one that affects low carb--how to get fiber without ingesting lots of carbs. Being on KK, that is an adjustment for me....

Dr. Oz doesn't make it a secret as to how opposed to saturated fat he is. Specifically regarding low-carb diets, he says in his book YOU On a Diet that "The theory behind protein-heavy diets like Atkins is that protein reduces overall food intake and could reduce calories as well. The flaw is that eating proteins dripping in saturated fat, like bacon, isn't exactly the same as eating the leaner, healthier forms of protein like chicken and fish" (p. 28). That right there raises red flags for several reasons, like the fact that that's NOT the whole story of how Atkins's works, he doesn't even try to make any mention of the metabolic changes your body goes through, natural fats aren't bad for you, and the fact that he seems to take more of his knowledge of it from the media rather than his own understanding of low-carb principles. If that weren't enough he also says, "The reason why so many low-carb dieters lose weight fast is because the lack of carbohydrates causes them to lose glycogen stores from their muscles, and with this loss of glycogen comes a loss of a lot of water; as soon as they reinstate the carbs, the glycogen comes back to the muscles and attracts the water. That adds the pounds right back. So the first five to eleven pounds of weight loss on a low-carb diet is the fake loss due to a temporary loss of water" (p.198). So, he basically doesn't think they're healthy or that they work. That pretty much sums it up.
At least he has a bit of class about it, though. In his daughter's book, The Dorm Room Diet, she calls low-carb ways of eating "fad diets", says that they don't work, make you only lose muscle weight and water (and no fat), and she even refers to Atkins as FATkins in the section's heading. Apparently, neither one of them has any idea that fat can be used as fuel, either (and one that is far more efficient than carbs, at that). I wouldn't mind so much, but SO MANY PEOPLE, including my own mother (seems like she'll buy into anything and anyone that appears on Oprah...), look up to Dr. Oz and really buy into his point of view without doing their own research first.

Thanks for that! I have the You Manual, but not the Diet one, b/c that came out when I was already Low Carbing it....knew it wouldn't apply to me. I wish he'd do his own research--it sounds like that is exactly the wrong message that is out "there" about Atkins.

Isn't the South Beach guy a cardiologist? What was Dr. Atkins? I just wish these Doctors would get there stuff straight....
I found the different experiments interesting...still watching the one on sex health...interesting...

Dr. Agatston, (South Beach Diet) is a Cardiologist as was Dr Atkins.
I dated a Gastroenterologist for a while...until he expressed contempt at concept of low carb diets. Meanwhile, here I am at a healthy weight and there he sits....at least 60lbs overweight. Only one of us did the research.

Great story Taoschick. I think we have to remember everybody is trying to make money off their given philosophy. I respect Dr. Oz but I'm surprised that he didn't delve into the science a little deeper. It's ridiculous to say that someone lost 200 lbs. of glycogen, and it will come back as soon as the diet ends. Yes it will come back if you don't continue to live the lifestyle, but not in the form of water.
I have a problem with Dr. Agatston in that he has put his name on some real "crap" food. He is a cardiologist and yet he promotes some stuff that is really high in sodium, and what about "Cool Whip" the second which I believe the second ingredient is "hydrogenated fat" can you say transfats. Bob Green same thing. He puts his name on foods that contain a lot of chemicals and probably fake "whole grain" labels. It's tough to claim to contain whole grains when there is almost no fiber in the product. But there is a lot of money to be made. I guess that stuff could be called the "best of the worst" food choices. Boy did I get out of the wrong side of the bed this morning. I have been on a rant every since my feet hit the floor! LOL

My GI doc recommended low carb for me! And last time I saw him he wrote down the name of the Protein Power book. (He's a friend and colleague of Dr Westman.)
