Especially at our age or in my case (way over) I am 69 there are so many supplements I would like to take while locarbing and some I need to take medically...I have discovered most of them have carbs and they add up rapidly..I have found I have cut back just to save carbs,,,I search every bottle looking for the vitamin or supplement with the fewest carbs..Like I would like to add juice plus and I guess that is 4 carbs a day too many to add
The one thing I know it is fillers that add most of the carbs that they add to make tablets so whenever possible I take gelcaps or capsuls thinking they are better..Don't know for sure..
What do you all take???

I just posted this on another forum, but add it here too since I'm sure over 50 - 72 and countin'!
I've been on and off Somersizing - I do find it's the one that works best for me. I had been really bad and since I was due for an annual checkup on August 1, I went back on Somersizing July 5. Since then, I've lost 16.5 pounds.
I did something different this time and it seems to be working beautifully.
For breakfast every day, I have a smoothie. It is NOT "legal," but I think it is what is helping me stay on the diet with absolutely no cravings and I'm consistently losing about a pound a week. Here's my smoothie:
1 1/4 c. water
1/2 lemon, squeezed
3/4 c. orange juice
1 tblsp. flax oil
1 tblsp. flax oil seeds (health food store)
2 tblsp. concentrated cranberry juice (health food store)
2 heaping tblsp. oat bran
2 tblsp. protein powder (health food store - I would do a whole scoop but it's so expensive I cut it down to the 2 tblsp.)
2 packet stevia (health food store)
3 heaping tblsp. no fat yogurt
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 cup frozen mixed berries
It's delicious - makes two glasses.
The remainder of the day, I food combine and somersize.
Most days I have a chicken salad for lunch with celery, tomatoes, onion, and lettuce, mayo. Other days I do a chef salad with roast beef, ham (that's probably not legal either), and swiss cheese with 3 tblsp. Paul Newman's origianal salad dressing. I always get Boars Head at the deli counter.
For dinner, I have a pork chop with a vegetable, or a stir fry chiken or a hamburger with a veggie.
I always seem to want to eat something about 10 p.m. or so and I've been having fruit - watermelon, pineapple, berries, whatever.
I seem to be able to eat the same thing day in and day out.
Some of this is definitely not legal, but the cravings are gone and that's all I care about. I've also learned - over these 72 years - that I MUST have a "fat day" every now or then. I either pick a day or it's a birthday or a holiday, whatever. One day I did candy and ice cream. Or I'll just eat cake. Or grilled cheese sandwiches. The next day I've gone right back, and these "fat days" have helped me stay on the program and have not stopped the weight loss. Over the past 2 1/2 months I've probable done six of the "fat days."
Hope this helps someone.
Regarding the supplements. I've never bothered to determine how many carbs are in them. I take a ton of vitamins. I try to get them in capsule form. I don't have a clue how many carbs are in them. I get most of mine thru the net at swanson.com. If I didn't get them there, I wouldn't be able to afford them and I can get capsules - or the gels - 90% of the time.

How many carbs do you think its alright to use for supplements
from the Dr I take
glucosamine 3 carbs
fish oil..have no carbs listed
from Kimkins I take
4 milk thistle no carbs listed
natures calm no carbs listed
on my own I take
2 multivitamins 2 carbs each
and a cranberry capsul no carbs listed but being as its cranberry it has to have some
I would like to add juice plus but that will add 4 carbs
so I try to stay at 20 carbs and the supplements use a minimum of 7 and if I add juice plus it would make 11 I'd also like to add ground flax seed which would add more..but does health take a priority here??? What do the rest of you do?

I'm 63 and take lots of vitamins and supplements and have not counted the carbs. I've lost 37 pounds in 3 1/2 months.

I've tried to keep the carbs at or under 20 per day and it's worked so far. I'm just adding more coconut oil for fat right now to up the calories to maintain for awhile since I've almost reached goal.
I also exercise and lift weights to burn the fat and keep the muscles!

Thanks for the welcome, Carbman. Good to be here. And congratulations on your weight loss. That's terrific and you look fabulous!
Pegala - I go back to my other post. I personally wouldn't bother counting carbs in your vitamins and other supplements. I feel it's a lot healthier to take them than not. They've never kept me from losing weight. The reason I gain weight is that I eat too much of the wrong stuff.
All our metabolisms are different, but there are some things I cannot live without - salad dressing, mayo and butter. One of the reasons low carb works for me is that I can still have them.
I'm hoping that THIS TIME I'll stay on it. I need to lose at least another 35 pounds. I found that smoothie on another diet I tried in January and I added a few things to it. Stayed on the diet for 3 weeks, but liked the smoothie so much I kept using it for breakfast. It's the only thing I can think of that is making this go-round easier. My last blood work had my cholesteral down from 290 to 210, which utterly amazed me. It's been up there that high for years. I'm doing nothing different other than the smoothie.
Once I get the sugar out of my diet, which usually takes me 3 days, everything gets so much easier. And in the past when I've strictly adhered to the diet, I've lost weight, but once I decide to have that "one potato chip," I open the floodgates. And before I know it, it's all back on. That's why this time I decided to include the "fat days" in the diet. Knowing I can look forward to them makes it easy to get right back on and go low carb the rest of the time.
The other thing that I think works for me is the food combining. I know we're not supposed to have a lot of fruit on low carb, but as long as I eat it alone, I'm o.k. The "rules" are pretty simple: Protein/fats with veggies, carbs with veggies, never eat protein/fats with carbs, eat fruit alone. Wait 3 hours before switching from a fat/protein meal to a carb meal and vice versa. Eat your fruit 20 minutes before a carb meal, at least 1 hour before a protein/fat meal, and at least one hour after a meal.
So far, so good. We'll see...
(Forgive these long posts - just hope what works for me might help someone else.)

Spunkie - Congratulations! You are doing fabulously.
I also exercise. I have a pilates machine and use it 4-6x a week. I was walking every other day, but I've had some problems with one heel the past year or so which has curtailed the walking, but I found a podiatrist a couple of months ago and I think I'm almost back to normal, so once the weather gets a little cooler here, I've got to get out again.
I think it's crucial that we exercise. I hate it - I'd rather be doing something else - but force myself to do it.

Susan-Tampa and Jimmy - Many thanks for the Welcome!
Actually, I really enjoy the exercise -crazy but - it's just part of my day. I know how much it helps to maintain and has certainly speeded up the loss. I do both the elliptical and the treadmill as well as lifting. I used to just do cardio but I know better now.
Have a fun day losing!

If you're concerned about carbs in supplements, try to find sources that don't contain sugars or starch. I buy mine from Puritans Pride, and you can usually look at the label before you buy. Most will say No starch, No sugar, etc. I've never considered counting carbs from my supplements, because they do so much to improve health, and the little bit that might be added shouldn't make a terribly big difference. And I take a LOT of stuff every day. Read your bottles and try to find brands that don't fill up with a lot of unnecessary junk.
I know I feel a lot better when I take them every day, and when I miss a day or 2, I can tell that I need to get back to them right away!
