Bella
Greetings!

I am so delighted that we have this forum where we can discuss the Atkins plan according to his 1972 original book.

Any other Atkins 72ers out there?

I will be posting information about the original plan including the guidelines as a

JAYBEE
so the only diff between atkins 72 and the new atkins is the fact that for the first week its just NO carbs- even though there are some carbs in cheese and cream -and then you just start adding them back, increasing every week? or have i messed this up? blink.gif
JAYBEE
i am a banned kk member and i think i want to do the atkins again, but my brain is so full of kk stuff, it is hard to keep track-but i know i have to up my fat...
Bella
Hi Jaybee!

You are among other KK refuges smile.gif

If you would like, you could post your menu (Im starting a new thread for that) and we can give you some feedback.

Good luck!

That's essentially right Kaybee. There is an induction list of ok 72 foods as a sticky thread on this forum, so take a look at that when you plan your meals. But yes, the first week or 2 if you prefer is protein and salads essentially! I would suggest creating menus for yourself based on the plan and post them if you want some feedback. Be sure to tell us where you are in the plan ie indution, OWL, maintenance.

Hi, I am also a Kimkins refugee switching to Atkins '72. I just ordered the original book! I can't wait until it gets here!
Bella
Welcome Sydney!

There is information about induction and OWL on the sticky threads, which you will also find in the book.

Happy posting!

HI BELLA

MY NAME IS SHARPEI AND I AM VERY INTRESTED IN DOING ATKINS 72
I AM CURRENTLY TRYING TO GET OFF OF THE KIMKINS WAY OF EATING
AND TRYING TO FIND SOMETHING MORE HEALTHY THAT WILL STILL ALLOW ME TO
LOSE WEIGHT. I AM SO JAZZED ABOUT THIS WHOLE KETOSIS THING
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT IS AMAZING. I LOVE NOT BEING HUNGRY THIS LC
STUFF IS GREAT. FROM WHAT I'VE READ SO FAR ON YOUR POST IT SEEMS
TO ME THAT YOU ARE VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE COULD YOU PLEASE HELP ME
GET STARTED ON THE ATKINS 72 PLAN. I JUST READ THE INDUCTION AND
MADE COPIES FOR MYSELF. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE IM DOING THIS WHOLE PLAN RIGHT. ALSO IS THERE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF DAYS THAT THEY WANT YOU ON INDUCTION.
THANKS
SHARPEI
Bella
Hi Sharpei and thanks for posting!

I would suggest ordering the original Atkins book- you can do a search on Amazon. Just make sure you look for "Dr Atkins Diet Revolution" (and not the one with "new" in it) which was published in 1972. Meanwhile, you can start on induction following the guidelines in the sticky thread. Induction is usually 1-2 weeks and is designed to get sugar out of your diet! If you have a significant amount of weight to lose, then you can stay on it longer.

Dont be afraid of calories and fat!
Use fitday online to keep track of your daily carbs if you havent already.
Atkins 72 induction gets the carbs from salad greens primarily and eggs which
do have some carbs in them (1).
I have always used 1/2 and 1/2 in my coffee, but only very small amounts as it adds up.

Post often and let us know how you are doing!

Hello everyone,

This is my very first post over here. I, too, am looking for a better alternative than kimins. I felt that the best part of kimkins was the ketosis because I really had no appetite.

I did black out once while on kimkins. I had just picked up my son and went staggering backwards after I picked him up. Luckily I managed to hold onto him and he wasn't hurt and I only suffered a bruised ego wink.gif At the time, I didn't attribute it to the diet, but looking back I'm fairly sure it was from the extremely low calories I was eating. I am hoping that by adding in some fat with the Atkins 72 plan, that won't happen to me again.

If anyone has any tips for me, please let me know.

Looking forward to getting to know all of you! biggrin.gif
Jimmy Moore
Welcome MasonDixonMama! I'm happy to see you here at my forum. You've come to the right place and my Atkins 72 moderator Bella will be happy to assist you with the transition from KK to this new plan. Definitely get your calories to a MINIMUM of 1200, your fat up SIGNIFICANTLY from KK (at least half your caloric intake if you can), and EAT when you are hungry. No more blackouts on that "other" diet, okay? biggrin.gif
PrettyPetite
Hi Bella,

Can you help me find the sticky with the plan? I went out yesterday but only found the new revision. I guess I'm going to need to purchase '72 online (I'm one who likes to go pick it up and not wait on the mail) lol. Will the 1072 version be closer to what I have been doing with more fat and calories being the difference? If so where can I get the most information while I wait for the mail?
Bella
Lisa, its at the top of the list of threads for Atkins 72!

Bella
agentlefawn2001
waves hello to everyone and Bella

and thank you Jimmy Moore sooooooooooo much for creating this forum of Atkins... Jimmy, YOU are the BOMB! high five, smiles. fawn

*** this is a long list of questions... just wanted to give you heads up ***

Atkins Stage: Fawn will be starting tomorrow, Sunday 09/23/07 in Induction.

(well its 1:07am now so its really today. LOL... I am just sooooo excited that we have an Atkins forum that YES I am up late tonight reading.. smiles )

okay I read the introductions on how to do Atkins 72 and I was sooo happy because it is very similar to the previous plan I was on. So I found myself wondering... have I been doing Atkins all the time and didnt know it? lolllllllllllll whewwwwww eye opening I tell ya. LOL.

Confusion = I looked in my library at home and sure enough I have TWO atkins books.

1. "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution" Copyright: 1992, 1999, 2002
2. "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution Completely updated 3rd Edition Copyright: 1992, 1999, 2002

QUESTIONS are below:

1. QUESTION: Why is it preferred to use the Atkins book from 1972? ..... if I am understanding that correctly that the 1972 version is preferred.

2. QUESTION: I don't see tomatoes on the list.. is tomatoes a no no?

Reason I ask is because for healthy carbs to go with the meat, I purchased Plain lettuce, cuccumbers, tomatoes. Now if tomatoes are "not" allowed for some reason during induction... can you please help me understand Why? (sorry it just needs to make sense in my brain for me to absorb this information please).

3. QUESTION: Am I understanding what I read correctly that ummm Salad dressings like Ranch dressing should be like regular and not fat free and not like low in carbs? Maybe I didnt say that right, sorry.

4. QUESTION: Okay I like "Ranch" dressing. Can I have Ranch dressing? If so, can I have the regular kind with fat in it or what do you recommend and how much of it can I have on my salad? Like a tablesopoon, or 2 or 3 tablesp0ons?

Note: I do not like oil and vingear salad dressings.

I am soooooooo excited cause I can't wait to start this Atkins eating plan because we are already kinda familiar with it... from what I read in the thread of induction, so YES this is exciting indeed, smiles. smile.gif

5. QUESTION: This part has me confused...

"Not sixty grams of carbohydrate on this diet but zero grams"

That sentence has me confused (from the induction thread) because there are low carbs in salad fixings.... do how can we have zero carbs?

6. QUESTION: Why is it preferred to use the 1972 version of Atkins as opposed to the NEW version? Please, if you would reply to this in detail in laymen terms so ummm I can understand please. smile.gif

7. QUESTION: " Drink as much water or calorie free beverages as thirst requires" My question is... I thought our normal amount of drinking plain water is a minimum of 64 ounces of water daily to help hyrdate the body and rid the body of waste materials. IF we drink only as much water as thirst requires... ummm won't that slow down the metabolism process as I have read that a lack of water slows the metabolism.

8. QUESTION: Is drinking Too much water on this Atkins plan bad kinda?
I ask this because IF I only drink water when I am thirsty.. thats not much water.. so it concerns me. Water is important and I don't wanna get constipated from only drinking when I am thirsty kinda thing for real.

9. QUESTION: Salsa and Ketchup, why isnt it on the list? Did they not have salsa and ketchup in 1972? I am not trying to be funny, I am genuinely asking for real.

I didnt see salsa on the list, nor ketchup and they came out with a 1 carb ketchup from Heinz.
I just cooked lots of meatballs and talapia fish today in preparation for my week as I only cook once per week. I like my meats moist and hot. Therefore I put hot salsa in the meat already and its cooked and stored in rubbermaid containers in the freezer.

I like salsa a lottttttt... I even use it on my talipia fish. It keeps meat hot in spices and moist.

10. QUESTION: so what do I do now please? I dont like bland foods. Is there a way to keep the salsa .. which is 3 carbs for two tablespoons. Can't I just like count the carbs and keep them under 20 but include the salsa ?

Note: The Heinz ketchup is 1 carb per tablespoon
Note: The Salsa is 3 carbs for 2 tablespoons.

11. QUESTION: I dont see Pork Rinds (pork skins) which has no carbs.... I dont see that on the list.. whats a sista to do when she wants something crunchy once in a while?

12. QUESTION: lawrd I cant believe I forgot the last question.. shakes my head. lol. Hopefully I will think of it later.

COMMENT: I like that we can STILL have sugar free jello.. yahoo!!! smiles.

My apologies for all of these questions and concerns....
I am a detailed orientated person who needs details to help me absorb and click things in my thought process... for real.

Also, this is a way of life and ummm okay here goes... I would like to tweet it to like let me actually be on it as a way of life and not like a temporary diet kinda thing.

NOTE: I am honest almost to a fault ... I just believe in being upfront with people and no longer in the shadows hiding truths or devulging half-truths. This is my new wonderful life... the freedom to tell the truth and nothing but the truth.. and I really like living this way because its "freedom" holla smile.gif hugsssssss

Fawn's BOTTOM LINE/Hard limit:
ya know how there are somethings you are just not gonna give up no matter what cause you will do it anyways? Well that would be me... cause I am not gonna hide what I consume or lie about it... I would hide food before and I dont want to ever do that again for real.... okay so here goes my list of 4 things.

*** 4 things I am not willing to give up... I am just being honest and upfront here please.. no disrespect intended or implied.. for real.

1. Salsa ... cause I like hot foods and thats the "only" seasoning I use with meat.
2. one carb ketchup .... cause I like it and it reminds me of a hamburger.
3. Ranch dressing ... Cause I like it a lot.
4. Pork skins .. for when I want something crunchy, its rare but I want the option.

okay I think I have asked enough questions for one morning. LOL

so I anxiously await your reply and I "sincerely" thank you all ahead of time for taking out the time to answer questions and stuff ((( hugs )))

Bella
Greetings Fawn and welcome!

Let's see if I can answer your questions....

You will need to decide which Atkins you want to follow! I would suggest reading both the Atkins 72 AND Dr. Atkins NEW Diet Revolution threads to see which might work best for you. It's a personal choice. I prefer Atkins 72 cause it works better for me with no bars and shakes which the other allows, but some people really like the other plan too! So ask questions and then try one of them.

Drink as much water as you need to-also count tea (but not coffee) in your count. I drank 60 ounces a day and it was fine.

The original Atkins book says zero carbs but you are quite right in that there are really up to 20 in veggies, eggs, etc.

I always included tomatoes but used them in small amounts during induction. You have to count their carbs toward the 20 per day.

Pork rinds are ok I think (I dont eat them, maybe someone else knows?)

Ken's makes great low carb dressings- Ranch, Balsamic, Caesar. Try one of those! Ranch in general is a good choice, just read the carb content!

I also used small amounts of salsa and pesto after induction. And yes, keep your carb count under 20 and you should be fine. But remember induction is designed to get you off sugars- if you need salsa why not use a teaspoon just for flavor? Catsup isnt on the list because its high in sugar,
but they do make a lowcarb one as you mentioned.

Hopefully this will help!

Happy low carbing!

HI BELLA

I AM ON MY FIRST DAY OF INDUCTION. I FEEL FINE BUT IM HAVING A HARD TIME
EATING SALAD BECAUSE IM SO USE TO EATING THE KIMKINS WAY( K/E)
THAT MY BODY HAS A HARD TIME EATING VEGGIES ON INDUCTION.IS THAT GOOD OR BAD. I'VE BASICLY CONDITIONED MYSELF TO EAT JUST LEAN
PROTEINS AND THATS IT. I KNOW I NEED MORE FAT BUT WHEN YOUR IN KETOSIS IT'S HARD TO GET IT IN. MY OTHER QUESTION TO YOU BELLA IS
YOUR STICKY FOR ATKINS INDUCTION STATES THAT IF YOU HAVE ALOT OF WEIGHT TO LOSE YOU CAN STAY ON INDUCTION FOR SIX MONTHS.
DO YOU THINK THAT WOULD BE SAFE FOR ME? I WOULD LIKE TO START EXERCISING AND I FEEL THE MORE I GET OF THE EASIER IT WILL BE.
ALSO DOES ANYONE HAVE THE RECIPE FOR THE ATKINS REVOLUTION
ROLLS I HEARD THA THEY ARE VERY GOOD AND WILL HELP WITH BREAD
CRAVINGS THANXS
SHARPEI
Jimmy Moore
You don't have to eat veggies if you don't wanna. Sure, the green leafy vegetables are gonna stay, but don't force anything else down your throat if it repulses you. Or, you could try cooking those veggies in lots of butter and/or coconut oil to make 'em REALLY healthy. biggrin.gif Hang in there, Sharpei, you're gonna make it, my friend.
Bella
Yummy ideas Jimmy!

Sharpei, its hard for me to say about what is healthy for you to do, or not. The Atkins book says its ok, but if you have concerns you can always check with your physician. And do you have any other health issues?

Try posting your menus in the menus thread and we can give you some help if you would like it! Also, be patient....it takes a few days to get the hang of it!

How long were you doing Kimkins?

MY OTHER QUESTION TO YOU BELLA IS
YOUR STICKY FOR ATKINS INDUCTION STATES THAT IF YOU HAVE ALOT OF WEIGHT TO LOSE YOU CAN STAY ON INDUCTION FOR SIX MONTHS.
DO YOU THINK THAT WOULD BE SAFE FOR ME?

I am gonna toss a few pennies in here. When I did Atkins in 2000 I lost while doing induction for the entire time. I didn't go over 20 carbs a day, unless it was a cheat day. I also didn't eat the sugar free candy, syrup, etc. Mostly because it was too expensive and it did stall me.

Remember YMMV and pick what works best for you.
Bella
Yep Gweebles, that's what I did too. I stayed on 20 carbs or less for 4.5 months, but I did use level one veggies (added broccoli, mushrooms, red peppers). It worked for me, Im just hesitant to say its medically ok for someone (not a doctor).

I do however say to read the book and make choices based on your own needs!

Bella
masondixonmama
Hello all,
Today was my first day of induction and it has gone well. I was wondering, what does YMMV mean?

Your Mileage May Vary smile.gif

Hi everyone,

I just came from the KK. I don't really know what to do? I am leaning toward the'72 Atkins version. I had a stroke in 2000. I had three surgeries on my foot. I gain about 10 pounds during that time and it just gave put me back into diet, diet, diet again. I diet then I eat a bit of sugar. Then I'd binge. I binge for about another 10 pounds, Then the process would start all over again. Now I'm 40-50 pounds overweight!!!!

I lost 20 pounds on KK. I've regained about 6 pounds. How can I change myself back to where I was.

Any help? I really like the fact that i could post a "cheat free" days up so that I and other people would know that I made it one more day.

What do you think?

Pam
Bella
Hi Pam and welcome!

Feel free to start a thread called Cheat Free Days Checkin!

There is a sticky thread at the beginning of Atkins 72 which has the basics. I think Jimmy says 1400 calories a day, 70 grams of protein and more fat!
(correct me Jimmy if Im wrong!!).

I would read the sticky, start a shopping list, and post your menus.

Bella
Jimmy Moore
At LEAST 1200 calories, a moderate amount of protein around 30-40% of calories, and a high amount of fat totaling 50-60% of your calories. biggrin.gif
sharpei

HI EVERYONE
THANKS FOR THE INFO JIMMY. BELLA TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION
CONCERNING MY HEALTH I DO HAVE HYPERTENSION AND ASTHMA
IM FINDING THAT WHEN I EAT LOW CARB MY ALLERGIES GET BETTER
IM SURE IT'S PROBABLY BECAUSE IM NOT EATING ALL THE WHITE FOODS
I ALSO HAVE HYPOGLACEMIA WHITCH IM SURE IS COMMON TO OVERWEIGHT
PEOPLE. BECAUSE OF THAT I AM TRYING TO GET MY WEIGHT DOWN
AS I KNOW THIS COULD BE A PRECUSER TO DIABETES SOMETHING I
REALLY DON'T WANT. FOR THE MOST PART I FEEL FINE THIS IS MY SECOND
DAY ON INDUCTION AND IM NOT HUNGERY SO THATS GOOD. I ALSO HAVE
ANOTHER QUESTION HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR IN KETOSIS
SHARPEI
Bella
Hi Sharpei and welcome to induction!

Some people use ketostix, but I didnt and could tell by the
slightly metallic taste in my mouth and the smell of my urine
which was more intense or concentrated than usual.

Bella

Hi,

I feeling pretty good again. I made it through 1 cheat free day yesterday. The first day is the hardest!

After coming from KK it hard to get in the adding fat. I'm trying.

Is there anything that usually works for all of you when you haven't gone to the bathroom for quite a while? Not laxatives, but something?

wink.gif

Pam rolleyes.gif
Bella
Lucky, I make flax muffins. They are 6 grams of carbs and 4 grams of fiber, so they help the bathroom issues smile.gif But they are not good for induction. I would try drinking more water and adding veggies ie salads.

Bella
sharpei
HI BELLA
I HAVE A QUESTION, I AM REALLY NERVOUS ABOUT SLOWING DOWN MY WEIGHT LOSE BECAUSE IM EATING MORE FAT. I FELT SO BAD EATING 2 TEASPOONS OF SOUR CREAM WITH MY SALAD. I JUST WANT TO KEEP MY CARB INTAKE AT 20 COULD YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHAT
A SAFE LEVEL OF FAT IS?
DOES IT MATTER HOW HIGH MY CALORIES ARE?
AND IS EATING TO MUCH RED MEAT GOOD FOR ME?
WHAT TYPES OF FATS DO YOU SUGGEST?
I KNOW DOING KK CAN SOMETIMES TWIST YOUR MIND BUT I WANT
TO DO THINGS SAFE AND SANELY?
WOULD LOVE YOUR FEED BACK, PLUS I PLAN ON STAYING ON INDUCTION FOR A COUPLE OF MTHS I SEEM TO FEEL PRETTY GOOD
BY THE WAY COULD YOU GIVE ME SOME SUGGESTIONS ON A LITTLE
FIBER. IT'S NICE TO BE REGULAR
SHARPEI :D :D
Bella
I think Jimmy might have some suggestions too....

But I would say EAT THE SOUR CREAM! One of the very destructive things about KK is that it messes with your mind about eating fat. Period! It's fine to eat fat, and it will help with your hunger. When I was on Atkins 72 in 1976 I never counted calories or fat, ate on plan and lost 70 pounds.

If you are concerned about the red meat, then eat chicken and fish!

Fats are in cheeses, mayo (yummy on your bunless burgers!),
almonds and nuts, salmon, hamburger. Use dressings on your salads!

I think the recommended amount of daily fat is 40 grams but Jimmy may correct me on that....

And you know, you will still lose 2 pounds a week on Atkins and feel SO much better!

Bella
Jimmy Moore
Definitely eat the sour cream and mayo for fat sources...I DO! And Bella is right--FAT IS YOUR FRIEND! Keep your carbs low and that fat is just fine. I wouldn't obsess over calories too much either. Just watch your carbs and get plenty of fat (as much as you need) and moderate protein at each meal and you should be just fine, Sharpei. Don't become so scale-obsessed that you derail your efforts. Put it away if you feel like you HAVE to weigh and get validated by that stupid machine. You're gonna do great if you just work the plan.

HI BELLA

IM HAVING SOME PROBLEMS WITH INDUCTION THIS IS MY FIRST WEEK
AND WHEN I WEIGHED IN I BARELY HAD ANY WEIGHT LOSS. I DON'T
UNDERSTAND WHY I WOULD STALL ALREADY. MAYBE I'VE BEEN EATING TO MUCH CHEESE I DON'T KNOW BUT IM REALLY BUMMED OUT. I WENT TO THE STORE AND I BOUGHT SOME KETOSIS STICKS AND THEY SEEMED TO STAY IN THE DARK RED
AREA. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE ME. I'VE BEEN DRINKING CRYSTAL LIGHT,COFFEE,WATER, AND I'VE BEEN TRYING TO INCLUDE MORE FATS IN BY USING SOUR CREAM AND CHEESE. AND I'VE ALSO KEPT MY CARBS AT
ABOUT 20 EVEN IF I WENT OVER A LITTLE IT WAS NOT ON HIGH CARB STUFF
IT WOULD MAINLY BE FROM MEAT OR CHEESE OR EGGS. COULD YOU OR JIMMY GIVE ME SOME ADVICE I HAVE SO MUCH WEIGHT TO LOSE THAT IT HARD TO UNDERSTAND WHY THE SCALE DOSEN'T SHOW MORE OF A LOSE
SHARPEI
Jimmy Moore
Lay off the cheese for now and stick with the meat and eggs for now. You need to get your body into ketosis and recuperate from the damage done to you metabolism by Kimkins. That can take a couple of weeks, but then LOOK OUT! Stick to this!
meggyliz
Hi Bella,

I think I'm going to give original Atkins a try. I've been following the Groves plan, and it's fine, but my weight is STUCK and I'm just getting a little frustrated. I know my body's changing in the right direction, and I feel like it's a WOE that's sustainable, but I really need to see the scale move a bit to keep my enthusiasm up.

I like how Atkins 72 is so clean and simple. I want to do it by the book, so there's no wondering if I'm doing it right - and hopefully this will make something happen for me weight-wise!

Do you think there are any modifications in the later Atkins diets that are worth adding to the 72 plan? Or is it best to just not mess with it?
