Hi - I hope I am not presuming but from your screenname I assume you're into running? I am an on-again-off-again runner and I was approached by a friend at work to train for a half-marathon. I kind of want to do it but I want to be smart about nutrition if I am going to really seriously take up running consistently.

Let me know if you can answer some questions and if I'm way off base, well heck it wouldn't be the first time, so just tell me to get lost!

Thanks!
Patty

Hi Patty,

Yes I love to run! I'm training for a half marathon right now. I ran in my teens and early twenties then stopped for awhile. I just started back up in March. I'd be happy to help anyway I can.

Julie!
I'm so excited to have a reply so quickly!

How did you modify your eating to accomodate for the extra training that you were/are doing? Did you add anything to your diet? I have actually stalled in the past from not eating enough.

Thanks for your time!

Um, could ya start with an easier question?

I've been struggling with the eating piece to be honest. I was doing k/e while I started to increase my training. On really low calories my body just freaked out. I have mentally not been able to get my food together for the last couple of months.

This last week I have been doing Induction and that is going better. One thing I have noticed is I need more protein when I'm running this much. About 1-1.25g per pound of lean body mass. For me that's about 120grams of protein. And I have added in fish oil capsules, 5-6grams.

Another experiment I am trying is to do low heart rate training. Basically the idea behind it is to build your endurance so your body gets accustomed to using fat for energy. How it works, is you keep your heart rate under a certain number. The formula is 180-age. For me that's 180-31=149. So when I run, I make sure my heart rate stays under 149. This requires me to run more slowly but it's supposed to retrain your body. Move it away from relying on carbs towards relying on fat.

I blog about my running and I did post a little about this system if your interested. The link is in my signature.

Wow.
I just read in your blog how you went to law school. Can I tell you I am also college educated, have read everything there is to read about every diet in the world and still fell for all that crap too? Don't feel bad; I think we believe what we want to believe. I too had one or two 300 calorie days myself.

Sorry for the tough questions. Here's an easier question. Do you do any weight training to supplement your running?

I'm going to go back and seriously read your blog. Thanks for the insight.

Yes, I try to do weight training. Weights are like veggies. I know its good for me but sometimes I slack on it.

My goal has been to do 2-3 full body weight workouts a week. I've been getting in 1 or 2 in reality.
