Does anyone have any hints about getting over the sugar. I am going threw the hole headache, I want it, need it stage but don't eat it.

Being a big sugar addict. This is the hardest part for me.

I also find myself going to the fridge. I am not hungry, this may sound stupied but I stand there like I lost.

Thanks

I've read that l-glutamine helps with sugar cravings.

Oh that doesn't sound stupid at all. I can't tell you how many times I've done that. Old habits die hard. This is going to sound crazy, but when I get hungry for sugar I eat bacon or ground beef. It may take a round or two but the cravings usually leave. When I used to cave in and have sugar binges like birthday cake and ice cream at a party, the next day I would plan on eating beef and bacon, and it worked. Replace the damaging calories (aka carbs) with something that won't put weight on you (fats) and it will stop. Fat doesn't mess with your blood sugar and insulin thus no weight gain, and you will break the sugar cycle. It may take a day or 2 but it will work. I'm guessing you probably won't overeat on the fat the way you might sugar. Be sure not to combine these two foods with carbs. Hope this helps.

I was going to give similar advice as Melodie - eat something that's mostly fat. What someone posted on a recipe list I'm on and this works well for me - mix a stick of butter with a brick of cream cheese. A spoonful or two of this will usually be enough for me to forgo the sugary stuff I'm craving.

Don't give in!!
It took me about 5 days to get over it so don't do it!!
It gets easier to hang in there.

I used to drink more water if it got really bad.
Sometimes it's just the habit you are craving and not the actual sugar.
At least for me.

After several years of low carbing, I still get sugar cravings a couple of days a month. When it happens, I'll eat a hard boiled egg or a couple of spoonfuls of cream cheese. The trick for me is to stay away from any low carb "treats" when that happens. If I eat something artificially sweetened, it seems to make it worse.

Yep, I'd reiterate the same things everyone else has said. Those cravings are really unusual now (on it for 2 1/2 months now), but when I do get them, I try to eat something with protein/high in fat. Yesterday at a work function I was surrounded by bagels and (my old favorite) enormous glazed donuts, and I ate a couple deviled eggs I'd brought along. That did the trick.

Good luck! I know it can be frustrating, but you can do it!

We've all been there. My solution? EAT MORE PROTEIN! Your body craves it when you think you're craving sugar/carbs. But you REALLY want protein. And fat, too! wink.gif

Been there...done that...have many many t-shirts. We all go through that. I tend to drink a diet soda or eat sugar free jello to help with the sugar cravings. I also recommend eating something high protein (Stallone Pudding...best killer of the sugar monster there is) to dampen the need.

I feel you on the headaches. Everytime I eat some to high in carbs I get a migraine that can knock down King Kong. It will pass once the sugar is out of your system. Gotta love the sugar withdrawals. smile.gif That is what keeps me on track...I hate the headaches.

Yeah, I will try a slice of sharp cheddar cheese or avocado. It ususally really helps. If that doesn't work I'll have some tea w/ a little splenda or some diet cherry coke. I can't even drink a whole can of Diet coke anymore it is too sweet now. Good luck!!!!

Diet Rootbeer (I don't do many artificial sweeteners but this is good) and heavy whipping cream mixed together. Talk about a rootbeer float low in carbs.

Also, fat, fat and more fat. It does tend to do the trick.

Dr. Atkins - 1992, p. 273, 284 - suggests L-glutamine before meals and when craving is the greatest, also, chrominium - GTF or picolinate - 200 - 600 mcg.

He says that chrominiunm is the most important nutrient for low-carbing.

I use 5 gr of glutamine everyday after my workout and take at least 600 mcg of GTF chromium everyday.

This might sound crazy, but when I had some issues out of the blue one day, and one of the dispatchers told me to have some hot tea with a cinnimon stick in it. Something about cinnamon (how do you spell this?) helping regulate insulin, I never researched it, but it worked for me. Plus, cinnamon is one of those things that reminds me of sweets even though it is not sweet. Let us know what works for you! The other thing I am finding is that fresh green beans taste really sweet to me now, even those chinese ones with garlic.

I drink a low carb "shake" chocolate for me. That takes care of it. I know how you feel with the headache, I too went through feeling REALLY bad for like five days and after I got through that I felt wonderful, just hang in there it is totally worth it. You can do it. Remember this.......You WANT to do it, you don't have to if you don't want to, but, you DO want to! biggrin.gif I'm rooting for ya! wink.gif

A couple suggestions that kill my sweet tooth:

1) A sugar free jello cup
2) Sweet omlet/crepe - Wisk 2 eggs with one packet of splenda and cook in a skillet like a crepe. Remove, and top with sprinke of cinnamon and some I can't believe its not butter spray or real butter.
3) a spoonful of cream cheese
4) a Canfields Diet Chocolate Fudge Soda - YUM

OH, I see Kim mentioned a sweet omelet-- smile.gif

Cheers,

Cinnamon works well for me, but my favorite is freshly grated nutmeg. Sometimes I'll add it with a tiny pinch of Splenda to an cream cheese studded omelet. Yum. And I often add it to my coffee with cream. As Simon says, it makes me feel like I'm eating a sweet even if I'm not.
