I'm currently reading the original Atkins book, and boy is it amazing how little has changed in 35 years. I only wish I'd found this sooner, but I was brainwashed like a lot of people, and could not even consider what the book says.
The first time I heard about the Atkins diet was in the early 00's when Peter Jennings reported about how it was "possibly dangerous" without any actual studies to show it was. Since the report was not in reaction to a study, the only other reason it could have appeared was that Atkins was becoming popular again. I figured ABC's friends over at Archer-Daniels Midland were getting upset, seeing as how they sponsor ABC's Sunday morning programs and David Brinkley was now shilling for them in retirement during the show he used to host.
Isn't the truth funny? I might not have heard of Atkins back then if they hadn't been so afraid of it that they felt they had to run stories against it.
I have finally turned off the evening news about two weeks ago. I done with being lied to and told what to think.

PS: Restless Leg Syndrome? Yeah, right! Pretty soon they'll have an expensive medication for your dog, who has restless tail syndrome.

Love that 72 book.
I quit watching the evening News about a year ago and my life has been so much more peaceful since.
...and for that restless leg syndrom. Take Magnisium it is a natural muscle relaxer, but don't take the made from Oxide Magnisium unless you need a bit of bathroom help.

Peter Jennings also brought us "The Search for the Real Jesus" which didn't bear any resemblence to good journalism (balanced, fair, credible sources). You can count on him to be on the PC side of any issue.
As for RLS, does magnesium really work? Do you have a brand recommendation? My fiance suffers TERRIBLY from this!!!

The '72 version of Atkins is wonderful in its simplicity. Cut carbs to nearly zero, add them back slowly, 5 per day each week, until you stop losing, then back down a bit so you keep on losing. No counting "net" carbs, just eat the meat, cheese and eggs, add in the carbs like veggies and cottage cheese. Worked really good for a lot of people, and there are still people who follow the basic plan.
Simple foods, fresh foods, no "frankenfoods", what's not to like?

Nothing to not like if you ask me. I have been trying in VAIN to find that version of Atkins. Everytime I thought I actually had it...something would happen and the book would not be sent to me.
I guess I am sorta doing the '72 version...my meals are mostly protein and non starchy veggies.
I remember that report Peter Jennings did. I was one of those people that lost weight eating extreme low calorie and no fat. Since Peter Jennings stated that it was harmful I remember telling a good friend that lost weight doing Atkins (a ton more than me in less time mind you) that we NEED at least 300 carbs a day. I said the words but I was also in awe with her because she had lost weight, looked healthy, and was happy. I was miserable and hungry at the time. She obviously knew something that I didn't at that time.
Oh well...I am glad I started Atkins (6 years later...since the low fat low calorie thing bombed) and if anyone knows where in the heck I can find a copy of that version please let me know. I would ask my Mother but everything was lost after Katrina. She had almost every diet plan known to man and I remember seeing that book...

Iggy, I know some people in another lc forum who found their copies at Amazon. If you have a Half Price Books in your area, you might try them, too.
I have a copy and would be pleased to look up anything you might have a question on.
(I just looked at Amazon, they have them! Just search for Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution. Looks like they have both hard cover and paperback.)

I buy most of my books through
http://used.addall.com/ You can sort by price and enter "1972" as a keyword.
I don't know all of the individual sellers of course, but the sites that are linked there are reputable.
(I'm a bookseller so I work with that site on a daily basis. No problem ever.)

Just look around, it shouldn't be hard to find a copy. I found mine, hardbound, on Ebay; I paid $1 for it.
edit:
I found a few here-
http://www.google.com/products?q=%22Dr.+At...roogle&ct=titleAnd look! There's a copy for only $500!

$500.00?? Like the birds of spring...I am CHEEP! Hee hee! Thanks for all the links. I am a ebayer and every time I thought I found the book they either didn't have it or it was sold before hand. I'm gonna get that copy because I am interested in seeing the differences between then and now. My library of diet books will be complete with that little gem.
I just picked up No Sugar No Flour diet...I'm not too sure about that one because he is saying foods that I KNOW aren't the best choices (potatoes...rice??) are acceptable with this guy. I think this book will find it way to someone else...maybe my brother will like it. He is one of those "Bread is a staple of life" people....
I can't wait to get the 1972 version of Atkins. I am definitely a book hound!

Peter Jennings was also a heavy smoker and died of lung cancer, so what business did he have in telling anyone the Atkins diet was unhealthy based on the amount of fat involved.

I have all 3 versions and I love the '72 version. He uses simple common sense. The newest version allows sugar alcohols and stuff that their company was selling at the time. Instant stallers for me, not to mention the stomach grumbles!

Gweebles, my feelings exactly! I lost at a much slower rate when eating bars and shakes etc.
Welcome!

Just wanted to thank everyone again for the links to finding the very elusive Atkins 72. I swear it was impossible for me to locate that book. I found them (I got a hard cover one for my cookbook collection and a paperback one to carry around for reference) and they have been shipped out. I am looking forward to checking the mail today. I feel like it is Christmas time.
I can't wait to read these versions and see the differences.
