I'll summarize briefly: Overweight many year, diagnosed with type ii diabetes 4 years ago, went on Atkins and lost 35 lbs, felt great, blood sugar completely under control.
Then introduces berries, whole grains, etc., in too large quantities, and let myself go.
I'm back up and blood sugar is out of control -- I feel sick as a dog.
I'm trying to get back, but finding it so hard. Yesterday had a meal at a friend's house. Are only brisket. Tasted a little sweet, but couldn't bring myself to say anything. I'm sure it had sweetener in it and now I'm paying the price.
I looked only for Atkins blood sugar control nutritional but couldn't find.
What is currently recommended as a supplement to help maintain b-sugar?
Thank you!
Joseph

I'm a type 2 diabetic & I highly recommend Dr. Bernstein's book. IMHO, it's required reading for diabetics. You can get more info at this website:
http://www.diabetes-book.com/There is also a discussion forum for Dr. Bernstein's WOE where you can find a lot of support and information. If you join the forum, you can post questions for others to answer & participate in discussions.
http://www.diabetes-book.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.plThere is also the Atkins Diabetes Revolution:
http://www.amazon.com/Atkins-Diabetes-Revo...89799529&sr=8-1There is a new edition in the works that I have on order from Amazon, but they keep pushing back the release date.
Hang in there and get back on track with low carb. It's helped me a lot and it's easy to stick to once you are used to it.

Joseph---if you had brisket and it tasted sweet they probably used grape juice when cooking it---a good friend of mine is Jewish and they have brisket for all major holidays---Rosh Hashanah just passed ----it is tradition in a jewish household to cook it that way

I asked the cook the following day and among other ingredients were honey and teriyaki sauce.
My problem is, there I was sitting as a guest at a table full of people with nothing to eat except, so I thought, the brisket.
The situation, combined with my own dynamics, made it all too easy to deny that the brisket tasted sweet.
I feel like this effort is kicking my Axx!

It is pretty hard when you eat at a non low carbing friend's house. My brother doesn't low carb and always says "Bread is sthe staple of life" I tend to try to being something that I know I can eat...like veggie rays, chicken wings, green beans (stuff that I know I can eat)
I also know how hard it is order when you are with a group at a restaurant. It is especially hard to ask what is in the food while you have others staring at you. At my job the whole department will go to Applebee's for lunch. The first time I order a plate and didn't request any special cooking. Mistake! The rest of the say was spent with me trying to not fall asleep due to my body crashing from all the carbs.
Don't get down...there were many a day when I fell my butt was getting kicked repeatedly from this WOE. After a while you will start feeling better and you will be the one kicking the butt of the plan.

The best thing is just don't look back, forget about it and move on.
Guilt will start the self spiral more then anything.....
The is nobody I hang around with that does low carb, most of the people I know like the eat in moderation approach and can do it but I can't.
When I eat over, I always bring something so I can eat too but I bring enough for everyone to try so that they can see it isn't all that bad,
BUT IF I have to sit and eat nothing then so be it.
They cann try and get me to eat or stare at me all they want,,,,,,,,,,it isn't them that is on MY journey it's me.
Don't give up Joseph, just stand up and go at it again.

Great sentiment Wanda!!!
Joseph--I'm like the rest---I always bring my own food to things---or eat before I go---but most of my get togethers are with my family and they know how I eat so try to have something available---but I still don't take chances---why sacrifice your health by being polite----stay true to yourself and your commitment

Here in Texas no one would add anything sweet to brisket to cook it. It's served with bbq sauce on the side, but you just get pure brisket.
It's really hard to eat with others who don't follow your plan. Take something you can eat with you, or eat before you go. If at a restaurant, and nothing looks on plan, have a salad with full fat dressing, and then eat some protein when you get home.
My dh & I did that a couple of weeks ago, we went to a rescheduled going away party for friends, but we were told at the last minute that it was for lunch, not supper. I said I hadn't had time to prepare anything, was told there'd be plenty. Well, plenty of sandwiches, chips & dip and lots of cake. Sigh. We each had a glass of diet soda, visited with friends, went home at 2 and had lunch. Sometimes that's just the way it is.
I've been doing Atkins for over 5 years, it's been slow going (the older I get, the harder it is to lose), but I'm the healthiest I've been since I was a teenager. It's the only lifestyle for me. I hope you find a plan that works for you, and that you get healthy again. It's worth it to stick to a plan, for the long term.

We've been taking our own food to family gatherings, church suppers, you name it for almost 20 years.
In some cases we eat before we go, too.
We often bring plenty to share, we take some of what's okay for us, but we bring something that's appropriate for our family almost everywhere we go.
People get used to it. If you were a vegetarian, it would be expected that you wouldn't eat meat even on a special occasion. Why should we let our WOE be any different?

Joseph, don't worry about the brisket. In my opinion you did the right thing and what i would have done. you stayed away from the other carb laden foods right? you stuck with the brisket, the obvious choice and while it had honey on it, you did great!
You could have easily tasted the sweetness and been like - well I blew it what the hell I'll start fresh tomorrow, but you didn't. You stayed on plan, as best you could and you get Kudos from me.
Always find the positive my friend.

It goes a long way!
