I've already shared my story about how I tried to follow a low fat diet and got so frustrated that I gave up on trying to lose weight. I don't know how much I got up to. I know it was at least 355 lbs, so that's my benchmark.
Things turned around for me when I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in Jan 2006. (By that time I had lost about 15 - 20 lbs due to high blood sugar, but that's not a good way to lose.) I soon discovered low carb and am doing it as much for my diabetes as for weight loss. It has help tremendously in both areas. I've been able to get off some of my meds and I avoided having to go on Lipitor.
I'm now around 245, down 110 lbs. My goal is to get down to 200 and see how my body is. Maybe I'll want to lose more and maybe I'll be happy where I am.
It's been quite a journey, fraught with a long stall, but I'm hanging in there for the sake of my health.
