For what it's worth, I count everything, fat, calories, carbs, sugar, protein, and fiber.

Melodie, if you make a "stickie" for this plan it would be great! I am very interested in this subject. My internet has been down for a couple of days due to a very slow cable company. I totally missed the start of this. It would be nice to have this as a nutshell post.

Thanks!

I definitely have to count calories as well as carbs to lose weight, so here I am!

Thanks Mary, I will see if I can figure out how to do that. By the way I just finally got around to reading your story in the newspaper. Such an incredible journey you have taken. It's funny because there was one thing in the article that really hit home. I was watching Dr. Phil years ago when Oprah was having her "Hamburger Wars" with the cattle ranchers There was a very overweight young lady on there and she was crying. She had been abused as a child. Dr. Phil told her that she had wrapped herself in a big protective blanket of fat, and that if it did not serve her in some way she would not do it. I thought about it and realized that my fat was serving me as well. I thankfully was never abused, but those words are what got me started on my journey. You are looking very beautiful now, but I'm sure a very big part of that payoff is that you are healed on the inside as well. So I won't just congratulate you on your phenomenal weight loss, but on your ability to overcome some real adversity. I hope the next part of your life is filled with the joy you deserve.

Mary, HELP! I'm looking at the controls, but I don't know how to make it "sticky"

I count calories and keep a "soft eye" on carbs.

I am really kind of floundering around here about how to adjust my plan with all the new information I have been hearing over at the Barry Groves thread, and the calories count thread. For me I believe that I will try to up my fats, and lower my protein a bit, and keep the carbs between around 30 as I achieve ketosis really easy compared others.

I will try to keep the calories around 1500 and see if that works out well with the high fat, but I'm sure how that is going to work not having ever tried it. I have actually read before in some other places that fat is the least available to your body for energy, so it makes sense that increasing your fat will be like cutting your calories, as long as you keep the carbs low and the protein moderate. What do you other calorie counters and short girls think?
LowCarbBand-It
Well I can tell you that I eat about 60-70% fat and eat about 15-20% protein. That comes out to about 1400 calories, under 40 net carbs a day and about 50-75gms of protein a day. Does that help? I am FINALLY losing 1-2lbs each and every week.

When I was eating 30% fat and 30% protein and 40% carbs and I was eating 1000 calories a day and a gazillion carbs I couldn't lose a thing!!! No one believed me and accused me of lying! That I was NOT doing! LOL I was starving though!

I've been meaning to ask, do you consider that low-fat? I think it's on the moderate to high side. My Weight Watcher friends thinks it's on the "your going to die from eating too much fat" side! Ahahahahaha

Hi Yvonne,

I consider it moderate to low fat, but the rest of the world doesn't. But then "who cares" they haven't been too successful doing it that way. LOL.
What you are doing sounds very close to what I'm trying to work my way into. I got Barry Groves' book yesterday and I have to say it surprised me a little. In some ways it's actually more moderate that I would have expected. Barry has a real way with words and explains his concepts every simply. I've read about a third of it so far and I think what he has to say makes a great deal of sense.

Just testing to see that this thread can be posted to.

Hi everybody!

I am 5'3" and I am counting calories. I am counting fat, protein, carbs, and fiber. I am also counting walks, coconut oil, supplements, and trips to the gym for weight lifting. I keep track of the food and exercise on my Fitday (PC version). I have been doing Atkins 72 for eleven days after having done Kimkins for five weeks. Quick summary:

1. Stopped binging and started exercising seriously in December 2006 (because I was quitting Nicorette Gum and wanted to prevent the common 25lb weight gain--I didn't gain a pound!)

2. In June 2007, started Atkins-DANDR for five weeks-lost 11 lbs. (was scared to do this because I have an eating disorder and diets can make it worse--it didn't get worse. I am still not binging.)

3. In July 2007, started Kimkins for five weeks. Also started taking more exercise and my supplements--lost 20 lbs. (almost binged on this plan--almost lost what is left of my mind--but I didn't binge or cheat once)

4. In last part of August--eleven days ago--started Atkins 72 and coconut oil--lost 3 lbs so far. (Thoughts of binging are farther away.)

5. Eight days ago I started keeping track of my calories on Fitday. After keeping close track of my hunger and what I was eating, I decided on a soft limit/goal of 1400-1600 calories a day. This feels really good to me. (Hopefully not too good!) It reduces my anxiety to see what I am eating. Fitday is such a blessing! I just can't take the attitude that if I relax and "eat to hunger" I will lose weight! Maybe it is my eating disorder or my anxious personality, but I need to keep close track of what is going on!

My means for the last eight days were:

Fat: 70%
Carbs: 8% (They are net carbs. I am doing Induction, and I will keep doing it indefinitely)
Protein: 23% (This is 85g/day, mean)

(Yes, they don't add up to 100%....Hmmm....must be some rounding going on)

Fitday claims that my BMR is 1611. Hmmmmmm

So, that is what I am doing. I really hope this works... And, in November I am going to get my blood work done again and see what has happened to my triglycerides, HDL, LDL, and blood pressure--and, of course, my weight!!!!!

Kristi,

I admire your tenacity by keeping track with Fitday. I know a lot of people like it, but I find it hard to use. I have started on Barry Groves plan (percentages are similar to yours) and I am going to just keep a written journal for awhile. "Short Girl" congrats on your success so far. When all is said and done I may end up having to do Fitday too, but I'm hoping to avoid it.

Journaling is a smart idea regardless of your chosen plan. Speaking of low-carb plans, don't forget to add your low-carb plan to your profile now. biggrin.gif

Thanks Jimmy,

Doing it now.
