I saw some information about the Alli diet in Walgreens the other day... about how it blocks fat... is it also supposed to be a carb blocker?

I don't think Alli has any effect on carbs at all!

Alli is a low fat diet I believe. It was created to help our body by pass digesting fat. It has been around as a prescription drug for several years. The one side effect that I have heard the most about is problems with having episodes of incontinence because of the explosive bowel movements.

If you go to their website http://www.myalli.com/ there is quite a bit of information to be found.

Here is a quote from the website:

The active ingredient in alli attaches to some of the natural enzymes in the digestive system, preventing them from breaking down about a quarter of the fat you eat. Undigested fat cannot be absorbed and passes through the body naturally. The excess fat is not harmful. In fact, you may recognize it in the toilet as something that looks like the oil on top of a pizza.

Because of the way in which alli works, eating meals with too much fat may cause side effects known as treatment effects

Hope this helps!

Let's just say, if you are livin' la vida low-carb, then taking Alli is a VERY BAD IDEA!

I did an entire podcast show about this FDA-approved OTC anti-obesity drug and it's not something you want to combine with a typical high-fat/low-carb diet. Unless you enjoy poo-poo in your pants! ph34r.gif

Here's some more food for thought about Alli that I've blogged about:

Alli---does NOT digest fat---it binds with it so it is not absorbed---the more fat you eat the worse the side effects---hence the brown stains in your undies

If it blocks fat absorption it may also block the absorption of needed nutrients. I would avoid it and eat real, healthy food rather than take drugs to control weight.
