I am a 60 year old woman
I was diagnosed with type2 diabete in July 2003, following a stroke. At that time, I was eating a "healthy" low-fat, diet and walking the dog daily.AND despite weight problems, had no symptoms
I was started on Metformin and Gliclazide, in the hospital and they couldn't get my blood sugars down on the hospital's diabetic diet. In fact in the 6 week stay in hospital I gained weight up to 100kg(220pounds)
Ever since I got out of the rehab department( which nearly sent me to the mad-house) I have been working on my mobility and trying to get the weight down. By following Diabetes-Uk's recommended diet, I gradually crept up to 107kg
I also had high blood pressure and very slightly elevated cholesterol.
I have gradually realised that the medical establishment is made up of sheep, who just follow what the previous lot say. I decided that my diabetes ISN'T going to be progressive and that I can get back almost all my mobility. Last year I gave up my disabled parking badge and I now do some kind of group exercise, including loads of walking, each week day and walk at week ends too.I even leadwalks for learning disabled adults. I also read Richard, Bernstein and started to cut my carbohydrate intake. In my youth I was trained as a scientist, so I know how to find where the carbs are lurking. I have now lost my 13th kg(28pounds)and plan to continue to something above my youthful 143 pounds. It doesn't do for a 60 year old to be too thin!! so about 170-180 would seem about right.
My blood sugars are pretty good and last A1c was 5.4% and I'm working on reducing it.
I still miss bread after 5 months
