Hi all!
I'm transitioning from an unhealthy low carb lifestyle (KK) to a healthier one. I believe fiber is so important and didn't get nearly enough of it on my last plan. I am looking to add 1/2 C to 1 C of "All Bran with extra fiber" in the morning and continue with lean protein and healthy veggies for lunch and dinner.
Should I subtract the fiber from the total carb count on the cereal? Here is the nutrition for All Bran w/ extra fiber:
1/2 C of Cereal:
50 Calories
0.9 Fat
20 Carbs
13 Dietary Fiber
Any helpful tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Oh and I found a FANTASTIC soy milk that has a mild flavor and when mixed with cereal, tastes just like milk! Here's the link:

I do subtract fiber, but also limit my total carbs.
For cereal, personally I wouldn't waste my carbs on any that I know of. Even subtracting fiber you're going to get 7 grams of carb. What else are you eating with this? I ask because I don't think it's enough to eat just the cereal with milk (soy or regular). Your intake would be too high a carb percentage. (1 cup soy milk + 1/2 c cereal would give you 3g fat, 4.9g protein and 9g net carb, which means most of your calories are from carb)
Personally I'm not convinced we need as much fiber as we're told....and cereals and grains are not the best place to find it. For me adequate fat intake is all that I need. If my fat intake is too low I get into trouble, high or low fiber intake.
I'd rather see you enjoy real food for breakfast. A couple of eggs with bacon or sausage.....or some yogurt with berries and nuts (whole milk yogurt or your carb % will be too high). If you feel you must have added fiber, try using a no-calorie supplement.
Look at the ingredients!
WHEAT BRAN, OAT FIBER, WHEAT FLOUR, CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, SALT, BAKING SODA, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, CARAMEL COLOR, CALCIUM CARBONATE, ASPARTAME, SODIUM ASCORBATE AND ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C), NIACINAMIDE, REDUCED IRON, ANNATTO COLOR, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B6), RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), FOLIC ACID, ZINC OXIDE, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, THIAMIN HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B1), BHT (PRESERVATIVE), VITAMIN B12, AND VITAMIN D.
The high fructose corn syrup would be a "deal breaker" in any food for me.
Why not use some flax meal in your eating? That's much better for you than the All Bran, in my opinion.
