Low Carb Specialties, the manufacturer, states, "SweetPerfection is made from oligofructose, which is chicory root ground to a very fine soluble fiber that looks and tastes exactly like sugar."

If 1 teaspoon has 3 calories, where do those calories come from?

A whole cup has 5 NET carbs, 0 protein, and 0 fat.

If a cup has 160 calories and 5 net carbs, where do the other 140 calories come from?

I understand that the GI is near zero, but the calories have to come from somewhere.

It does have a nice clean, sweet taste. No cravings or unusual hunger.

But inquiring minds would like to know.

What's the total carbs? Are they just subtracting fiber for the net? (Fiber does still count towards the total calories, right, even if it is poorly digested and hence doesn't spike insulin response?)

That would mean that 1 cup has 35g of fiber plus 5g of impact carbs.

If the claim is Sweetperfection is almost all fiber, that would be a reasonable number, wouldn't it?

I have no idea what the right answer is; I was just doing the math.

On another note, what are people's experiences with this product? I don't bake much so haven't needed to buy it thus far, but I'm guessing I'm going to have to learn soon to preempt grandma stuffing my little guy with sugar-laden treats when I'm not looking.

Their website says that it's 100% fiber:

I don't know but I can't eat the dang things. Even with the different ingredients they work on me just like sugar alcohols do! UGH!! I was so hoping to find something I could stand to eat for lower carbs. I guess it is back to the 70% or 85% Lindt bars. I do like dark chocolate and I can make my own with some splenda and a microwave but I was hoping that these would work for me.

So is this a caloric fiber? Maybe that's it.

You just can't get 160 calories per cup from 5 grams of carbs and nothing else.

Ladyred, are you talking about Chocoperfection? It's sweetened with SweetPerfection and erythritol both.

Yes I know I was sooo hoping I could get by with it but it is just not to be. I ate one square and paid for it big time in about two hours!! biggrin.gif

Very interesting! I was reading the other day that some fibers have calories. I had never known this before and wondered if it applied here....

Hmmm.... I just read this article. Apparently SweetPerfection is almost all caloric fiber. Caloric fiber! Who knew?

I have always heard that if you multiply fat x 9 and protein x 4 that the remaining calories are probably from carbs, and that this is a good way to find "hidden carbs" not reported by the manufacturers. See here.

But if a food contains caloric fibers, then that wouldn't be just right would it?

Inulin is also a caloric fiber. I had no idea. (I knew it was a fiber. I just didn't know it had calories.)

Apparently these caloric fibers are not digested until the large intestine and have 1.5-2 calories per gram. The above article says that they may protect against breast and colon cancer.

SweetPerfection has a GI of zero. (IOW, it doesn't affect the blood sugar at all.) I think I'll keep portions small at first, count it as zero, and see what happens. I didn't start using it until about a week ago.

It is a nice sweetener as far as taste goes. I've been using it in Coconut Fudge, and I really like the consistency.

LadyRed, it may be the erythritol and not the SweetPerfection. Erythritol is normally absorbed in the small intestine and causes no colon problems, but if it's not....

Apparently, it looks like each person may have a different absorption ability.

It could be the fiber (oligofructose) and/or the erythritol. My body can't hand ANY sugar alcohols, including erythritol, or chocolate with Polydextrose in it. Polydextrose is also mostly fiber and I react to it pretty much the same as with sugar alcohols.

I guess it is back to the 70% or 85% Lindt bars.

I've been getting Endangered Species Extreme Dark Chocolate (88%) bars locally. I like the chocoperfection bars but I don't like having to pay for expedited shipping in the summer. An entire bar is 12 carbs but I generally only eat about 1/4 bar at a time. It's nice and smooth and not bitter.

LindaSue and Valerie,
Yes I am pretty sure it is the Erythritol. I tried some type a candy a few years ago. I thought it was Hershey's who was using it and had the same type of reaction. I think part of it might be the IBS that makes me so sensitive to any type of SA. I tolerate Splenda very well but any SA just about kill me off.

Taoschick,
I have not tried the Endangered SPecies bars. I have seen them at the health food store but not bought one. I did pick up and Green and Black bar the other day. It is pretty low in carbs if you only eat a small bit. I had a square the other day and it was pretty good tasting. I did cut my craving too.

I get those too! I was eating 3 squares (~1/2oz) of the various 70% Endangered Species bars before, as part of the Linberg Diet, (a 40-30-30 diet), but when I went low-carb I stopped. When I decided to go back the 70% bars just tasted too sweet.

Now I take 1 square of the 88% bar a day and it suits me just fine. Plus I can pick them up at my local alternative pharmacy when I go in to get my vitamins & teas biggrin.gif
