I'll tell you what really bugs me. "Whole Grain Foods" that when you read the packaging it doesn't have any fiber (duh, how is that possible) and mislabeling.

When I was doing Kimkins all the girls in my Short Girls Group were so enamoured with turkey baking, which I think is disgusting. But I thought well I need to tighten up so I'm going to buy some. Every package of turkey bacon did indeed list the fat and calories as being half as much as "real bacon", but here's the kicker. The turkey bacon standard serving size is for 1 slice. The "real bacon" serving size is for 2 slices. You'd think somebody would notice wouldn't you. Needless to say I continue to eat my "real bacon" which is real food, not that dye laden sawdust they parade in front of us as bacon with lower fat and calories.

What really "bugs me" is...

"I was really successful on Atkins <or any plan> 4 years ago.

Now I have gained all the weight back, plus <insert pounds here>."

Exactly how were you successful?

I have to say that weight training 3 times a week has been my safety net. I have 20 lbs that I'd like to get rid of right now, but I've never gone back to my biggest, not in 8 or 9 years.

I lost my Mom to Alzheimer's about 5 years ago, and that's when my weight started to creep. But I think the muscle I have gained has really helped my metabolism.

You really have to read labels. Back when I was doing the low fat thing I found that many times the regular version of something had the same or less amounts of fat and calories or the difference would only be maybe 30 calories. ARGH!!!!!!

A lot of people think that just because something says Low Carb or Low Fat that it is sooo much better for you while if they really read the label they would probably find that they are only losing a fraction of the calories and eating something with even more chemicals then if they bought the real thing.

How about Sugar Free Cool Whip? Who are they trying to kid? It's got plenty of sugar in it and even has more carbs per serving than regular Cool Whip. I hate to think how many low carbers think this is a good thing to eat because it's sugar free or because the carbs seem so low per serving.

Sugar Free Cool Whip - 3 carbs per 2 tablespoons

Ingredients: WATER, CORN SYRUP*, HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL (COCONUT AND PALM KERNEL OILS), LESS THAN 2% OF SODIUM CASEINATE (FROM MILK), NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, MODIFIED CORN STARCH, XANTHAN AND GUAR GUMS, POLYSORBATE 60, SORBITAN MONOSTEARATE, SODIUM POLYPHOSPHATES, ACESULFAME POTASSIUM AND ASPARTAME* (SWEETENERS), BETA CAROTENE (COLOR). *ADDS A TRIVIAL AMOUNT OF SUGAR. **PHENYLKETONURICS: CONTAINS PHENYLALANINE.

If the sugar is so "trivial" why is it the second ingredient in the list???

Regular Cool Whip - 2 carbs per 2 tablespoons

Ingredients: WATER, CORN SYRUP, HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL (COCONUT AND PALM KERNEL OILS), HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, LESS THAN 2% OF SODIUM CASEINATE (FROM MILK), NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, XANTHAN AND GUAR GUMS, POLYSORBATE 60, SORBITAN MONOSTEARATE, BETA CAROTENE (COLOR).

Amen to that Linda Sue. I was so excited when I saw the advertisements about SF Cool Whip. What a disapointment when I read the label. In fact if you read the labels on all three products (Cool Whip Lite, Cool Whip, and Cool Whip Sugar Free) they are almost identical.

Yep, LindaSue, that Sugar-Free Cool Whip one got me, too. MORE CARBS THAN THE REGULAR! UGH! Do they think we're all just a bunch of idiots? Don't answer that question. 8O
ladyred
They do that with most Light Salad dressings also. If you look at the carbs compared to the regular version they will sometimes be double what you get with the good old regular fat kind.

It is very deceiving and even then a lot of things only have a few calories difference.

I had the same thought when I picked up a tub in the grocery store a couple of months ago. biggrin.gif It was actually quite insulting.

That's why you should just make your own with Splenda or stevia.

Hooray for REAL CREAM! LOL.

I think Low Carb would be much more popular today if it weren't for the fact that we have too few people reading the wonderful LC books that have been written and too many people taking the one-liners of the food manufacturers as the truth.

I suspect that most of the "low carbers" from 2004-2005 who quit, quit because eating the "low carb" or "low sugar" products the food companies provided didn't work for them.
Jimmy Moore
How true that is, Valerie! That's why I started my blog two years ago to try to engage the culture of people who got discouraged by their "failed" diet...

Slowly we are reeling them back in with the truth! This forum is helping, too! smile.gif

"Truth in advertising"

no such animal---as for the so called SF products---the way it is set up by the gov't---they can say a product is SF if it contains no white sugar---it can have all the HFCS, fructose, etc it wants and still be labeled SF

and then you get into all those hidden carbs in stuff---that's why I make my own condiments---tomato based products etc----matter of fact Linda---I use your ketchup recipe and different salad dressing recipes
Dave
This is the risks from eating man made products.

I keep finding more and more secret ingredients that don't agree with me!
