I have read a lot of posts about people just not being hungry when they are low carbing and in ketosis and having to make themselves eat. I gotta say, this just isn't the case for me
On the amount of carbs I'm eating and the colour of my sticks, I am in ketosis but I always seem to have this low level hunger - almost constantly. I have been tending to graze rather than do 3 meals a day to deal wih this but have been stalled for weeks and was worried that grazing may be the problem. Yesterday, I tried to not eat between meals and was starving by dinner. After dinner, I picked a fair bit too - all low carb stuff but still.....
Am I the only one that doesn't get the benefit of no hunger with ketosis????

I constantly eat about every 2-3 hours, Vee. That's why I don't get hungry. Plus, my diet is about 60-70% fat which is a natural appetite suppressant. Try eating more fat and more often rather than waiting on an arbitrary "meal" time. That may help.

Hi Jimmy - I just worry about eating too may calories with the extra fat. I've tried a few things in the last few weeks - eating more often, eating less often, tweaking the percentages, eating more fat, eating less fat, eating less protein grrrrr. I'll eat breakfast and feel hungry less than an hour later. Nothing seems to be working. If I was in maintenance mode I'd be over the moon because I can clearly eat quite a lot without putting on weight. It's just losing the last few pounds....
I just wonder of all the wisdom out there applies more to peeps who still have quite a bit to lose and less to those who are struggling with the last 10 pounds or so. It's very discouraging. I joined a Biggest Loser Weight Loss Challenge group but I'm worried I will drag them down by not ever losing these last few pounds

Hey Girlfriend,
Did you finally get your computer fixed? Vee, I wish you'd indulge me and do an experiment. Quit counting calories keep your carbs in line, don't limit your fats at all and see what happens. If you are stalled what have you got to lose. It might just work, you won't be hungry, and you'll probably be a lot happier.

Hey Mel
My hard drive died, so we had to replace it and yes, I lost everything

Needless to say I am now backing up regularly!!!

I am kind of doing what you've suggested. Have dispensed with the spreadsheet - so sick of weighing and counting everything I eat. I am watching the carbs and keeping to around 20g per day or under and trying to not worry about much else - adding fat where I can. It just seems like I have been doing this forever with little result - I'm not the most patient person!!!! Even half a pound a week would keep me motivated!
So confusing too - Jimmy eats every 2-3 hours but Charles says if you are eating in between your 3 square meals a day, you're not eating enough at meals. I know everyone has to find what works for themselves and it's very much YMMV but it's finding out what works that seems to be my problem.
Sigh.....

You know Vee, funny you should mention that. Someone expressed that very concern to me about getting conflicting information and how they felt that might be confusing to a lot of people. I have to agree. I think the challenge that we have to overcome as a forum is that as with Kimkins or Southbeach or Atkins we are not focussed on just one plan, but on the "lifestyle" in general. But maybe that needs to be clarified here. That is a job for tomorrow as it's midnight here and I'm ready to call it a day. Thanks for your input Vee.

Vee, I'm also one of those people who almost never stops being hungry. If not for eating low carb, I would continue to get bigger and bigger because of it. I do like Jimmy does and eat at least a little something every 2-3 hours or so. I will say that my hunger is a lot less intense on low carb than it ever was on high carb or a reduced calorie/low fat diet. Back then I would get so hungry that I'd feel sick or like I might pass out. I never get that kind of hunger anymore, thank goodness. I don't have any advice to offer that others haven't already given, but just to hang in there and keep working to figure out what works best for you.

Thanks
Mel - I think there is always going to be conflicting info because every "body" is different and what works for one may not for another and people will always promote what has worked for them. The challenge is finding what works for you and that can be difficult. If you are trying different things, how long do you stick at it before you decide it's not working and try something else? I can see why it is confusing - there is so much information to absorb and many people with personal experiences and successes - very daunting if you are new to all this!!!
Linda - I'm glad to know it's not just me. Like you, it's not an intense feeling but more a vague kind of awareness of being hungry and not totally satiated for any length of time. Just gonna stick at around 20g carbs or less per day and see what happens - was starting to get obsessive about it all!!!!
Cheers

Vee, just out of curiosity, do you have any problems with heartburn or acid reflux? I've had both since I was pregnant with my son almost 24 years ago and low carbing hasn't completely gotten rid of it. It is better than it was but not gone. I'm gradually starting to think that some of what I perceive as hunger may really be heartburn. It seems like if I take a heartburn pill after breakfast, even if I don't have heartburn at the time, I don't feel hungry again as soon as I normally would. I haven't quite worked out if this is really what is happening but I really am starting to think that I'm confusing heartburn for hunger sometimes. I take a generic version of something like Pepcid AC or Zantac but I don't know if you have the same brands over there. I'm not talking about the chewable tablets like Tums which aren't effective for the kind of heartburn I get.

I'm going to throw in something my mother always said to me when I said I was hungry and needed some cookies. She would always ask me if I would like some brussel sprouts. At the time they were the veggie I hated the most. Of course I would say no - her answer was "then you aren't really hungry or you would eat anything put in front of you." and that was the end of that.
I think lots of us don't really know the difference between hunger and wanting to eat - I struggle with this constantly (even WITH my mom's statement running thru my mind) trying to decide if I am REALLY hungry or have an eating "habit". It's almost impossible for me to really tell the difference. I have to examine what I ate, how long ago and if any emotional issues are in play. I notice when I'm busy outside I am rarely hungry yet, it's the same amount of food consumed as the days I'm "starving" but sitting around reading. I'd like to fix this mental problem but don't know what to do other than analyze it to death and hope I feel full after hard thinking.

I think it's what and how much you eat.
Essentially I agree with Charles. I eat fairly large meals and I'm rarely hungry between meals. Most of my meals are 500-600+ calories, and only a few are from carbs. I have steak, it's an 8 - 10 ounces (or more) along with 1-2 veggies. My salads are huge with 2-3 cups greens and often other veggies, AND 4-6 ounces of meat. I get a lot of protein and a lot of fat in my meals. When I eat, it's not just until I'm no longer hungry, but until I'm satisfied....and if I eat like this I can go 4, 5 and even more hours without feeling hungry.
I believe that fat keeps you full a bit longer as it slows the absorption of other macro nutrients, and protein lowers your appetite and keeps you satisfied longer. Some people just can't eat large enough meals, and need snacks. Others, like me, enjoy large filling meals less often.
The only way you can succeed on low carb is by tweaking it (after the initial 2 weeks or more induction/phase 1) so you're not hungry, have variety, and don't get bored. Where ever you are in your plan, be sure to eat when you are hungry!! If you need a snack, have one! If you feel like you want to tr and stop the snacking, try having a large breakfast (like 3 eggs, 2-3 strips of bacon plus 2-3 links of sausage) and see if that hold you to lunch. Again at lunch, increase your portions and see if that holds you. If you get hungry between meals, have a high protein/high fat snack.

Hi Linda - I've never really had a problem with heartburn (that I know of) so I don't think it's that. What's interesting is that when I wake up I don't seem to be all that hungry and could easily not eat at all (for how long I don't know) It seems that eating breakfast gets my digestive system up and running and it keeps running from then - all day!!!!
Hey Zyarah - I'm not eating all the time (thank goodness) - it's the awareness of the hunger that is disconcerting. My first response is usually to have a glass of water or a cup of peppermint tea. I know what you mean about being busy tho - I was out all afternoon/evening yesterday with my daughter at dance comps and was busy - didn't notice it so much til I was driving home, but by then I hadn't eaten for 6 hours! There was a kiosk there with cakes and donuts and I never felt tempted at all - I'd rather eat nothing than have that stuff
Hi Cindy - I do have trouble eating biggish meals - couldn't do the breakfast you have!!!! Maybe I just have to eat more often, like Jimmy - I was just hoping that if I trained myself to not snack my body would get used to it and not complain.
It's just annoying that I don't get the benefit of ketosis that I have heard so many people talk about

I know what you mean about not being hungry some mornings. It seems like I should wake up starving after not eating for over 10 hours but most mornings I can hold off eating for a couple hours while I do things around the house. In fact, I often try to hold off as long as I can so that I can shorten the time span between my meals as much as possible.
I've tried eating a really big meal a few times just to see how long it would take to get hungry again and most times I'm hungry just as soon as if I'd eaten a light meal. My husband drives me nuts sometimes because he can go for a whole day without eating after having an especially large meal the day before. About 2-3 hours after eating Thanksgiving dinner I'm hungry again.
zyarah, you have a smart mother! Now that I'm a low carber I do end up eating some peculiar snacks sometimes. I actually wouldn't mind nibbling on Brussels sprouts or a small piece of leftover meat and that sort of thing. I'll eat pretty much anything to ward off my hunger until my next meal.
Wanting to eat when I'm not really hungry is an issue that I need to work on too and I'm trying to work on being able to tell when I've got stomach hunger or head hunger. Our brains can really play tricks on us sometimes.

Good point on the really being hungry zyarah...and I just checked out your pictures from your link....amazing! I happen to love brussel sprouts so I'd even enjoy them as a snack! Except the carbs are pretty high!
I just want to say that if anyone gets confused, it's our own fault. I don't know anyone that has said, "This is the only way to do it" and everyone is very conscious that people are doing different ways of eating. I find the ideas here very helpful and informative...so thanks to all of you. I really think everything I've read is very open to the way I want to follow and they say what they do for themselves. I appreciate all of you, especially those of you who post often like melodiegale, lindasu, cindysue...etc....sorry, I can't remember all the names. But there are quite a few who post often and have great knowledge...and Linda Sue....I've made several of your recipes and enjoyed every one! Thank you so much!

Oh, I forgot to write about what the topic was about. I too am hungry a lot and I've kept my carbs at 20 or below most days....so I'm not sure what that's all about. I was just writing in my journal about it too.....I started feeling hungry after switching from Kimkins (K/E) to Atkins, so I don't know if it was because I added vegetables twice a day or if it's all psychological...it's something I'm working on as well!
