Hey PrettyFace. Just wanted to start by saying welcome! Hope to see you around the boards.

As for your questions, www.fitday.com and the total carbs is usually the total amount of carbs. Many people deduct fiber from the total carb count, giving a net carb number.

Thanks for the web site. Do you deduct the fiber for net carbs? Should I?

Fiber has no effect on blood sugar levels so it is acceptable to subtract it from your total carbohydrates. Some people subtract sugar alcohols because in many people, they have a minimal impact. I subtract them but you may find they cause a blood glucose spike. It would probably be better to avoid them entirely until you have more experience at telling how different foods effect you.

Well then....if I want to reduce the number of effective carbs in what I'm eating, can I add fiber to it as in Fibercon or something similar to get to the 'net' carbs I am shooting for?

Ummm....

Hi Bobbie,

Fiber cannot be digested by the body therefore it has no impact on your bloodsugar. Other than some of the health benefits, it's like it's not even there from a weight loss standpoint. In other words it passes right through. The same is supposed to be true for sugar alcohols. That has been debated in some circles. Some people will count half of the sugar alcohols in a given product and deduct the other half the same as they would fiber.

I think you are getting it backwards with the fibercon. Unless it has sugar in it (I'm not familiar with the product) then it should be all fiber and therefore subtracted not added. Since it's probably just fiber then it's a wash.

If you don't need those types of products for the obvious reasons then I would look at some more natural souces of fiber such as flax seeds which have some really good benefits to offer you. Hope this helps!
