Yes, I know, I am needy, sorry.

Here is what I have eaten so far today, just wondering if it is close to right, and how much else I should or could eat for the day.

1 Atkins shake
6 slices bacon

1 Pickled Sausage

8 oz. cucumber
1 hamburger patty
1 TBS Mayo

So far today that is 1256 calories, 94 g fat, 17g carb, 83g protein I think the "net carbs" is some where around 10 or 11 carbs.

*sigh* I am craving nuts, but am trying to stay "clean". Anyone got any suggestions or comments?

Thanks,
Amy

Minimimi, do you feel like you have eaten really well today? Have your meals been appealing and delicious? Do you feel fully satisfied with the kinds of food and the quantities you've eaten?

Get the nuts out of the house. It's not time yet, and getting them out of the house is generally the safest way.

But if you are craving, you might want to make other changes. Are these meals pleasurable for you? Do you like other veggies?

What program are you on? Is today your first day?

Hi Valerie,
First, thanks for answering. To answer your questions, sort of, sort of, yes and no.
I feel as though I have eaten reasonably well. My meals have been delicious, but no so appealing. I feel satisfied when I eat, and mostly with what I ate, but I do get hungry in the next few hours. I am really still afraid of the fat and calories I guess. My totals for the day were about 2000 calories, 161g of fat, 25g of carb (16 net carbs), and 115g of protein. (OMG, that seems like SO much.) I was doing so well on Kimkins, and have been trying to switch over for about 2 weeks. But I have not lost any weight, (but have maintained) and feel frustrated.

I was away at a scrapbook retreat this weekend and resisted all of the temptations that were offered. I brought Atkins shakes, a few bars, some natural peanut butter, and some canned meats with me. I also brought my own Marie's Salad Dressing and enjoyed salads with cheese. I am happy that I maintained, but I want to get moving in the right direction.

I am trying to do Atkins, I guess I am dismayed at my amount of calories. I have tried to eat the foods that were recommended to me, but seem to go nowhere. I am at a loss, and not sure what to do next.

Thanks for your help,
Amy

Ah, the fear of fat...therein lies the problem most newbie low-carbers face, Amy. It's natural since we've been hammered since we were kids with the message that fat makes us fat. But it's just not true.

FAT IS YOUR FRIEND--say it with me--FAT IS YOUR FRIEND!

As long as your carbs are restricted, then fat is an ESSENTIAL part of your healthy lifestyle. Forget about the scale for now and focus on eating better. After all, this is not about weight loss first and foremost. Livin' la vida low-carb is about your health.

The weight loss will come, my friend, but we need to get you over the fat phobia that still exists in your mind. Fat is your new fuel since carbs are limited. Embrace this new way of life like you've never done anything else in your entire life. The results will be a fit and trim Amy like nobody has ever seen before!'

YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

8 oz. cucumber

Amy,

Think about this.

That is the only natural non-rocessed food you ate today.

My advice, try to have most of what you eat be 'real' food that has not undergone a process.

Something to think about.

Our bodies do best on natural food.

I agree with Dave Amy honey!

Get rid of the shakes! They stall many people.

Eat more fat, more protein, natural whole foods.
Don't count anything but your carbs, focus on keeping them around 20 grams a day from mostly veggies!

You can do this!! Many who did well on Kimkins had a stall for like 2 weeks, but the scale will start to move I promise!

Don't give up on yourself or this WOE, when followed properly, you can't mess it up!

Hi Amy!

I thought your fat and cals were just fine, but when I read your menu I just thought it looked a little short on fun. :-)

I have a very few days that look somewhat like that (a rare ultra-busy day), but for day after day eating I find that I need my meals to be a little more interesting. :-)

YMMV, but it's just something that crossed my mind. ;-)

Don't be afraid to eat. Eating is good, and eating well is better. Your body works best if you nourish it *consistently*; it will release fat if it receives fat *consistently*.

If you are hungry, eat. Stop when you are pleasantly full. Eat again when you need to.

Fancy cooking isn't necessary to incorporate a little of the fun factor, if you find that appealing. I use my broiler for cooking meat and my microwave for cooking fish. I make salads (I buy the pre-washed lettuce mixes) and cook some veggies (microwave or stove stop).

I use a pretty plate and an attractive presentation. I really enjoy my food.

I don't get very fancy with most of my cooking, for everyday, and most of my meals take <10 minutes of prep time, but I do try to make sure to incorporate some of my favorite foods with a hint of luxury or richness. These remind me that I am eating really welll and am not deprived.

CONGRATULATIONS on doing so well this weekend! My hat's off to you!

Thanks so much for your reply. I took your advice, even before I read it. I realized that I had not had any steak (my most favorite!) in MONTHS. My grill has been out of gas for a while, and before that I was on Kimkins, avoiding beef. So today I bought a George Forman grill that I can use inside. I also bought a nice sirloin steak, (and a london broil) and when I got home I grilled up the steak, steamed some cauliflower and broccoli and had myself a beautiful, fun lunch! My kids that were home loved it too. I am very excited about the grill, I know that it will bring a lot of joy to my cooking, not to mention cut the cooking time! I have also started to plan a few meals, so that I know what is coming up, and what I have on hand.

For the next few weeks I am going to have to be a bit of a "penny pincher" so I am going to do some research on inexpensive, yet yummy, cuts of meat that can get me through the rough weeks.

And I am going to follow all the good advice that I have recieved, including stop looking at my calories for now, (well, I'm going to try REALLY hard on that one!) and keep my foods more natural, and watch just my carbs.

Thanks again for caring, sometimes I just feel so alone, even though there are so many here.

Here's something else you might consider: you may not be losing scale weight because your body is "rebuilding". With the very restricted fat and calories of KK, a lot of people (raising my hand) lost lean mass. Now that your body is finally getting all of the materials it needs, there may be some repair work happening under the surface. . . This is a good thing.

I try to plan a week's worth of meals in advance. My husband loves meat, and so does our daughter, but our son prefers fruit or other "side" dishes to meat. So, I try to make sure that I have something for everyone, so to speak, at each dinner. I then try to make enough that we'll have leftovers for lunches the next day or two.

Of course, this doesn't always work. There are days when my husband will ask what we're having for dinner, and be rather underwhelmed by my reply. He's kind of a foodie, and his taste buds seem to be very influenced by his mood. I try to maintain a lot of variety in a week's menu, so I can usually find an alternate that he's happy with. . .

If you haven't done so already, check out the recipe section of this site. Also, LindaSue (aka goddess of LC food) has an outstanding LC recipe site here. I have three cookbooks by Dana Carpender that are low-carb; one is full-fat LC, one is slow cooker LC, and one is moderate-fat LC.

In a nutshell, there's not a reason in the world you shouldn't take the opportunity to enjoy your food! Life is too short for a diet limited to dry chicken breasts with all visible fat trimmed off and a dusting of rotisserie spice (but not too much, because there might be carbs hiding in there! dry.gif )! As far as I'm concerned, there's a reason that cows taste good! smile.gif

The cheaper, fattier cuts are a good choice! Another trick I used (when money was way tighter than it is now..) is to hit the grocery more frequently... see what they have in the "mark down" bin. Many times there would be a beautiful cut of beef, but it was getting close to the "use it or freeze it " date. I got some great dinners that way!

Valerie - would you mind sharing EXACTLY how you cook your fish in the microwave? As in what kind, how much, spices, times. ETC?? If you don't think this is the right section, then can you do it in the FISH section? I'd sure appreciate it.

I always see that as a major part of the problem... food as fun, food as entertainment, food and dinner as something to do.

Yvonne, I love fish!

I'll meet you by the fish section tomorrow.

I'm making a note now; if I forget, please send me a PM.

But Gus, we all have different ideas of "entertainment". I'd bet my next paycheck that some of the things I like to do have all the appeal of smallpox to you. . . and vice-versa. . . wink.gif

I enjoy cooking; I enjoy sitting down to a meal with family and friends. Cooking is an opportunity to create something for the people I love, to try new things. I like dinner with lots of conversation -- we're sharing a common experience (the meal) and catching up on individual experiences!

Food shouldn't be the center of one's social universe, but I don't think there's anything wrong with a meal as an event. I think casual, distracted eating is more problematic. . . Mindlessly munching away usually results in poor food choices and overeating.

Besides, if food is to be purely functional, then God gave us waaaaayyyyy too many tastebuds! biggrin.gif

This is a really good discussion. I am trying very hard to take in the good, common sense thoughts that everyone has. Things make sense, but it is hard for me to "believe" because I have not lost any weight in 13 days. In fact I have bounced back and forth between 252 and 254 for the last 2 weeks. It is very frustrating. Is my body readjusting, or am I just plain in a stall? Are there some people who are just too sensitive to carbs and should really keep then VERY low? I am trying to not get over whelmed and freak out. I am commited to this WOL and feel better in general, so I guess that is the most important thing.

Do you have a Fitday or DailyPlate account? I noticed your profile says you're "winging it" -- are you gravitating toward a particular plan? wink.gif

Sara
Minimimi
Winging it has evolved into Atkins - I am doing induction right now. I will probably be sticking to it until I start to lose weight again.
s_loveless
Have you read the book? smile.gif I had to dig out my old copy and re-read it before I started Induction again. . . I didn't remember nearly enough of it to go ahead without a refresher course.

I'm sure the weight will begin coming off again soon -- if you're anything like me, you're much more successful when you have a set of "rules" to operate by. . . biggrin.gif
