Full Version: What should the next president do about obesity?

There was an interesting post on JunkFoodScience about this subject. I don't agree with Sandy Szwarc about everything. She doesn't think obesity is a problem and doesn't think sugar is bad. But, she's right on about other issues and points out flaws in the "research." Overall, it's a good blog.

http://junkfoodscience.blogspot.com/2007/0...t-do-about.html

She points out that, despite Government anti-obesity programs, obesity has increased in New Mexico and Arkansas. Now presidential candidate, New Mexico Gov. Richardson wants to take his failed program nationwide. Just leave it alone!!!

The Government, with its food pyramid, is part of the problem. New Government obesity programs would only mean more of the same failed low fat, low calorie, food pyramid nonsense and would only make things worse. We'd all be better off if the Government would get out of the nutrition business.

The government has no business dabbling in nutrition. They should stop wasting our money and concentrate on the important issues.

As a mother I'm furious about them wanting to "get involved". I blogged about them "putting the schools on a diet" here:

Schools trying to feed our Children "Healthy Food"

There is a link at the bottom of the blog for the actual article.

I also know that Sandy did an article that talks about how if the government starts to TOTALLY control our health care (as in socialized medicine) - will they also FORCE us to take Statins and FORCE us to eat "their" diet? Checking our blood to make sure we're taking our meds and eating "their foods"? It's frightening really. I know I don't EVER want anyone telling me what to eat and what meds I HAVE to take.

I agree; the "big brother" mentality is starting to go a little too far. . . Okay, way too far!

I love my doctor, and I think that medical science is, overall, a wonderful thing. But when the government is telling what I should/shouldn't eat, it makes me laugh. Remember when butter would kill you, so we should all eat margarine? Now it turns out that margarine is more likely to clog your arteries than butter! Eggs, meat. . . there's been so much misinformation out there that was labeled "accurate" and later decided that maybe they didn't do a thorough enough analysis.

As far as the government managing my health care. . . Hasn't one of the hot topics the last couple of months been the myriad ways the VA is failing our Iraq War veterans? Why would anyone want the government running our health care after looking at what these poor vets have to deal with to get basic care? blink.gif HELLO. . .

Oh man Oh man, keep the government OFF my plate, thank you! I'm a big girl (no pun intended)

Whenever Governments start controlling things, they don't want to stop.

Quite frankly I dsicovered the solution to my obesity and insulin resistance on my own. I have not met a doctor yet that knows how I can address the problem.

I've had to do this myself.

Listening to other people bark things at me only made matters worse.

The government telling us what to eat???

A few quotes from Ronald Reagan who is one of my heroes and the first president I voted for (2nd term):

"Government does not solve problems; it subsidizes them."

"Man is not free unless government is limited. "

"No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! "

"The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help. "

No, I definitely do not want the government telling us what to eat....

More government, less choice. Who needs it.

I agree, obesity is not a government issue. The goverment subsidizes school lunches and look what those kids get fed.

We need more personal responsibility (action = consequences) in this country not less.

AMEN to that, Haylan!

Bronwen, I totally agree, but I'll probably be roasted again because I'm sure everyone is sick of hearing me say that.
