I'd like to know how to eliminate all the graphics in the posts... I have my settings set to not show that... yet there they are.

Sorry... but there's so much "screen clutter"... it's almost impossible to find the words in a post what with everything flashing and the pictures, and the....

Hi sjm,

On the top of your screen click on “my controls”

Go to the left side of the next screen to “board settings” and click

On the same page you will see “Board Display Settings”

To the right of “Do you wish to view member signatures when reading topics? Select “no”

To the right of “Do you wish to view images in posts, such as smilies and posted images? Select “no”

Towards the bottom of the screen is the “Change my account options”, click on that button.

You should no longer see any signatures or graphics.
sjm
Yes, one would think that!

Yet, I do still see all the graphics...!!!

I did all that... multiple times even...

...bouncing pink lady? Are you set on guided, or normal. Whichever one, try switching to the other while you make your changes, then back.

Thank you both...

it seems that once again, even though my brain told me that “Do you wish to view member signatures when reading topics? Select “no” was set at "no"... this time, my eyes read "yes"! and changing it to NO (for real), did the trick!

Bifocals... senior moments... what can I say!!!

Thanks again!!!

You're welcome. I tried to change something one time and forgot to click on the "change my accounts options", so of course it didn't work. Easy to do.
sjm
That part I had... it was the show signature... sometimes "yes' is read as "no"...

It just goes to show that the brain will tell you what it wants... even if that's not what is there!

Don't you like looking at us SJ???? LOL - Just kidding (Was gonna insert a wink here but realised you wouldn't see it!!!!!

I'm glad that was worked out. When I asked the admin about this (prior to all the wonderful responses from my moderators), here's what he suggested:

If she wants a "clean, no frills" version of the board, she can view
the lo-fi version at http://www.lowcarbdiscussion.com/lofiversion/ --
although she will have to view the "full version" when she wants to
post a response.

All of those things (images/signatures/etc) can be turned off at:

http://www.lowcarbdiscussion.com/index.php...=UserCP&CODE=04

However, disabling those things adds a cookie to your computer with
that information, so if she's still seeing those things after she
disables them, it's because she has her security settings too high or
cookies are disabled.

Hope this information helps everyone! THANKS! smile.gif

It's not that I don't like the pictures (and I can always go back to seeing them), it's just that some people have more pictures than words, and even with a 20" monitor, I couldn't find the words... because of everything else going on in their post.

I'm "old school".. and it's the words, to me, that are important..

So... in order to help ME be less frustrated ... the graphics needed to "go away".

I'm just a Luddite...

At one time at LCF they suggested that people only show their signatures in their first post in a thread and that they should hide them in subsequent posts in that thread. Just a suggestion but maybe we could try that here too. It would make the threads quite a bit shorter to scroll through. Some forums that I visit have "Enable signature" unchecked by default so that people don't forget to uncheck it. Maybe that's another thing we might try. It would be easier to remember to turn ON your signature once per post than to try and remember to turn it OFF in all of your other posts in a thread.

I see that our signatures don't show up in our Post Previews. That's not the case on the other forums I visit. If we could see our signatures when we preview it would be easier to remember to turn them on or off.

I'll ask the admin about turning them on in "preview" Linda! THANKS everyone!

Unfortunately, while that option is hard-wired into vBulletin, there would be no way to add such a feature to Invision Power Board without major modifications of the core files.

The way Invision works is that, when loading a topic, it loads the content of the "signature" column from the "ibf_members" table for that particular member (obviously if there's nothing in the signature column, then it just shows up as being blank). There's no column in the ibf_posts database that would allow someone to enable/disable signatures since that was never intended as an option.

The only suggestion I have for Jimmy would be to create a rule that signatures can't exceed a certain length, although from what I've seen, nobody here really has a lengthy signature that takes up unnecessary amounts of room on the screen.

THANK YOU again, Admin!

I'm a bit confused by what the Admin posted. Whenever we post a message, we do have the option of turning off our signatures. I've turned mine off in this post.
sjm
Yes, it's a tiny checkbox underneath the reply window.

I think I misread your post, but I thought you meant you wanted to see if there's a way for the board to automatically only show a person's signature the first time they posts in a topic. That's hardwired into vBulletin but there's no way for me to add something to the board that says "if this is the first post from this person, show their signature, otherwise, don't", cause it just looks for their signature in the database and then displays it. Did I misunderstand what you said?

Maybe you are confused by this line:

"There's no column in the ibf_posts database that would allow someone to enable/disable signatures since that was never intended as an option."

I guess it should have been clarified it in this way:

"There's no column in the ibf_posts database that would allow someone [to make a modifcation to the board that] would enable/disable signatures [based on whether or not they've already posted in the topic] since that was never intended as an option."

No, that wasn't what I meant. What I suggested was that "Enable signature" be switched to unchecked by default rather than checked. Is it possible to do that? That way each poster's signature would only show up if they take the time to make it show up each time they post. I guess it's not really a big deal either way though. After visiting so many different message boards, you eventually learn to tune out the pictures and flashing banners, etc.
Admin
I think disabling it by default would cause more annoyance to users, though, because a lot of people that are new to forum software would constantly forget to turn it on. Besides, that's the reason why there's a "disable forum signatures" option in the control panel -- for people that don't want to see them.

Although, in the end, I suppose it's up to Jimmy. I should be able to figure out a way to make it disabled by default if he wanted.
Jimmy Moore
I'm all new to this forum thing, so I'm not sure whether defaulting it to enable or disable makes the most sense. I'm leaning at this point to leaving it to enable signature and simply asking the members to leave graphics beyond their ticker and pics out of it. Does this sound like a plan everyone? THANKS for your help as always, Admin! Without you, this board would never have been birthday, so we are all grateful for your service.

If anyone who wants to can turn off seeing the graphics and blinkies in others' posts, then can't we still have them?

I'm a bit upset that my friend was asked to remove her butterflies when so many others still have lots of pics in their siggys. Why was that? (was it too big?)

Here's my take: A lot of us posters are of the female persuasion and we like STUFF. It's in our genes. And we're marking our territory and announcing via graphics who we are. A lot of who we were was taken from us over at KK, and we're trying to find ourselves again.

Can we keep 'em, Jimmy? Please? Can we? Can we? With splenda on top? As long as they're not HUH-YOOGE?

As long as they're not going to cause bandwidth issues for the board and slow things down for everyone, I'm for keeping them. If they're making people feel comfortable and "at home" here then so much the better. I'd never thought of it the way that Lori put it and she made a lot of sense. There's nothing stopping the men from putting cars and motorcycles in their signatures but I think we should draw the line when it comes to pin-up girls and that sort of thing, LOL.
Jimmy Moore
I've never told anyone to completely remove all of their signature, Lori. But with Chrysalis, the montage of butterflies was difficult to navigate through. She can add back ONE butterfly because I did not ask her to remove ALL of them. That's all. Keep your signatures fun, just don't get too busy with them. Okay? smile.gif
