I stay away from yogurt because of the high carb counts. Some people have told me that yogurt is okay when you are low carbing because the carbs are milk sugars which are different from other sugars...or something like that. Where I shop I haven't been able to find just plain yogurt (believe it or not), everything is fruit flavoured, low fat, and some of them are sweetened with aspertame or splenda. The average carb count for one container is 16 grams. Is this still illegal? I won't eat it if I can't...not a huge deal. But I do like it and wouldn't mind having a container once in awhile.

Let me know your opinions please.

I would not buy a yogurt that has real sugar in it.

Plain yogurt is generally in a LARGE container... ask... have them get it for you; shop someplace else?

I buy Trader Joe's Greek Yogurt which has 1 gram of carbs for 2 T.
I like the cheese variety! But most store bought yogurts are full of sugar!

Sue Ellen is that you?

A certain percentage of sugars are supposedly consumed by the fermentation process. I don't know what the actual counts are...but I did eat yogurt all through my weight loss and it never stalled me.

It's hard to find here as well but we have two stores that do sell full fat plain yogurt. If you want to give it a try but are concerned about the carb count, try draining a container of yogurt (make sure it contains live bacteria) through a cheese cloth or coffee filter for 24 hours. You'll lose a certain percentage of the carbohydrates in the whey and you can blend the remaining thick yogurt with different flavorings. Try it once or twice a week and see if it stalls you.

Lori,

I am a yogurt lover and after induction was well over and I was losing steadily, I introduced yogurt into my meals and snacks. As others have said, the fermentation process eliminates most of the lactose and turns it into lactic acid. I have been eating a quart per week of whole milk plain unsweetened yogurt with no apparent stall to my weight loss. I'm still losing about 2 to 2.5 pounds per week. However, as always, YMMV!

You'll have to go to a health food store or something like an Earthfare to find whole milk plain yogurt. I have on occasion found some Dannon whole milk plain yogurt at Wally World, and it is tolerable, but if you want the good stuff, head on over to the local health food store. The difference is appreciable.

So far I've tried Cascade Fresh Whole Milk Plain Yogurt and Nancy's Whole Milk Plain Yogurt. They are both top of the line yogurts so far as I'm concerned, but the Cascade Fresh Whole Milk Plain Yogurt is the thickest, creamiest, smoothest tasting plain yogurt I've ever put in my mouth. It was recently on sale for $2.19/qt at my local health food store; and look at the nutrition label...only 12g carbs per 1 cup! However, keep in mind that most of that is lost in the fermentation process, so the carb count is actually much lower than that!

Sometimes I make a little yogurt and cream smoothie for lunch, dinner or a snack. I put maybe about 1/2 cup of plain yogurt, about 2 tablespoons heavy cream and some Davinci Vanilla SF Syrup in a cup with a few blueberries, blackberries or raspberries. I just stir it up with a spoon and it is soooo good. Kind of like eating ice cream or a milk shake.
